L03 VS Infiniti G35 Coupe and Cobalt SS Turbo

Hey guys I thought I'd share a couple races I had last weekend. I had a bit of fun and did alittle better than I thought. Every Saturday the local kids go out to s deserted road out here for alittle racing and originally I was just going to spectate but I got talked into a couple races just for the hell of it. My first race was my friend Alex's Infiniti G35 coupe (basically a 300z with more bells and whistles). From what I understand all he really has are Nitto DR's like myself CAI and exhaust. Here's a pic of the car. All my mods are in my sig plus I'm still working on my tune but I had it close enough for that night.

Well we line up after he does a John Force burnout and All I did was just dust off the tires. lol I stall up to about 2000 and I hear him bouncing off his limiter (DO all R i c ers do that?) and we're off. I instantly get about a 2 car lead and pretty much pull about a car more on him. By about the end of our run I had around the same to about a 3 1/2 car win over him. He then says he wants to run again because he thinks he can do better so I say "sure, why not" We get back to the starting line and again his impression of J.F. is outstanding and as always I just pull up and stall her up a bit,lol We take off again and this time I guess he gets alittle over zealous with the shifting because I here him grind third twice before I begin to pull 4 on him. Still, a win is a win.

The next run was quite a surprise for me because I thought for sure I was heading for a butt whoppin but I did alot better than I thought. My friend Robert, just recently purchessed a new 2009 Cobalt SS turbo, It's a nice little car but ever since he got it he's been acting like the king **** at the local hangout. So he comes up to me after my races with Alex and asks me if I'd like to run him. I said yeah, I then told him that he's going to play hell beating me out of the hole because of my Nitto's but like an *** he tells me that it doesn't matter that he going to stomp my *** anyway. I'd show you a pic but he doesn't have one on his Myspace page. Black with grey wheels. This isn't his car but it looks exactly like this one.

Anyhow we line up after heating up the tires abit. (I figured I better get them alittle warm this time) I stall up to about 2000 again and ofcourse I hear him using his engine like a trampoline and we're off. I immediately pull about a six car lead on him from a dig, I guess he spun a bit and I hold about a 7 car lead for a good part of the race. I guess his boost kicked in and he started to reel me in SLOWLY by the end off our litte run I had about a 2 car win over him. When we all get back to the hangout amazingly he was quite humble over his loss and said "for a 305 that little bastard has some balls" and all was cool. Sorry so long but I thought I should share since it's been a while. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did,lol

Re: L03 VS Infiniti G35 Coupe and Cobalt SS Turbo

I haven't run it down the track as of yet but from everybody says I should be a very low 14 to high 13 second car. I know the best time the G35 has every ran was a 14.5 and the best the Cobalt has run was a 14.2, SO I'm thinking I should be able to pull a 14 flat out of her. I'm still tuning so it's still not perfect but 13's shouldn't be impossible and I'm still running the stock heads and cam as of right now so here's to hoping, lol

Re: L03 VS Infiniti G35 Coupe and Cobalt SS Turbo

Everything as far as interior has been removed save my 15lbs Mastercraft racing seat I got for free from a buddy of mine. I made my dash out of cheap grey walmart carpet and home depot styrofoam.

Replaced my stock HEAVY A$$ bumper supports with boxed aluminum. That I made from the local metal shop.

Stock SMC hood with weight pulled out of it. I swiss cheesed the bottom skeleton and removed the heavy steel supports and replaced them with homemade aluminum. The hood only weighs 22lbs and is just as strong as stock.

Stock 16x8 GTA wheels with Nitto NT555R drag radials with old kuhmo's up front. 41lbs a piece

Gutted my stock wiring harness, I was able to pull about 5 lbs of unneeded wire out of it. I still need to do my dash harness though.

Aluminum LS1 driveshaft. 10lbs versus 18lbs

Everything under the hood that wasn't needed is gone. the only thing that running on the front of my engine is my Alt. And that's about it for now. I know I'll be gaining alittle weight when I put my alston SFC's on but I'll be losing even more when the ZZ4's go on. I do want to go to coilovers and a tubular k-member to shave alittle more weight and make more room.

You know, I have thought about putting a 100 shot system through it but at this point I have no idea how to "tune" it in. If I can get an idea on how to do it then I'm all for it.

just came across this thread upon reading the "what you're putting down with your 5.0 tbi" thread. great kills robert, props for your setup with stock heads & cam. and that's some nice excessive weight reduction indeed! i bet that thing hauls *** with that weight combined with 3.42 gears and TBI torque the DR's sure help you out hehe.
i also like your engine bay and your dash. of course it looks gutted, but it's still a tasteful way somehow. also love your hood setup and the HO decal

btw i THINK the EBL features N2O support, it can be tapped into an output port to be driven instead of the EGR..

If it's not in the low 13's-high 12's after tuning I'm gonna be pissed, lol I'm thinking about going with a "4 inch bore kit" in the near future (I got 8500 back on my taxes) but in the mean time I still want to see what I can do with this little motor. it's surprised me so far.

so... anything else been done since jan? personally i would take some cheap cloth/carpet or something and cover up the interior, but thats just me. also, the engine looks SICK!

I have no doubt intake/heads/cam would put you in the 12's expecially with a bore kit. Good luck on the car and good job on laying the smack down on the others.

Re: L03 VS Infiniti G35 Coupe and Cobalt SS Turbo

I haven't done a whole lot since January. The most I have done really is the Ground Control kit and Snypers. My biggest focus at the moment is getting better at my tuning skills which luckily I'm getting a good grip on. I'm sending my Trans off to phoenix to a friend of mine to rebuild and install my Probuilt road race kit. After that the heads/cam/intake/46mm TBI and converter are going in on the same day. I'm going to have ALOT of fun tuning that, lol. I know once I get bored with that I'm looking for an LT1 to build up and drop in, Still weighing my options at this point.

well 12's aint gonna be good enough for you? lol. i wouldnt see the point of swapping over the lt1, or are you going use some parts from the current 305? an ls1 would be nice for you though, could probaly get you around 2800 atleast.

Re: L03 VS Infiniti G35 Coupe and Cobalt SS Turbo

Lol, To me it's not all about the time slips. I just would like to branch out in a new direction because I pretty much know all there is to know about GM TBI systems. So to me LT1 is the next step. It has alot of flaws and benefits that I would like to learn about and try to do away with many misconceptions that some have against the LTwhatever system. it should be fun.
