Plugs

Anyone know which Delco plugs to put in an 83 LG4.

I think the old ones were R43 or R45 maybe.

The book in crap tyre only goes back to 85.

Thanx

Thanks - I got the code now - it's R45TS.

The car has one hell of a misfire right now and it's fouled the NGK platinums that are in it so I just want to get some cheap plugs in there to see if that cures the misfire.

I appreciate the offer on the plugs but I probably have to get this sorted out in the next few days. Timing is at 11 which is OK - no ECM.

Can't say for sure about April 4 but if I do show up I'll bring some stands and a floor jack.

yeah R45TS are the plugs to use. gap'm at .045. if the plugs are fouling...check the plug wires, cap, and rotor for wear. could also be the carb running rich.

Wires, cap and roter are new but there's some oil getting up into the distributor.

I think the carb is a little bit rich but it's been worse w/out causing this much of a problem.

It's got the usual puff of blue smoke at start up but it's also blowing oil smoke all the time now so maybe the rings and the seals are just finished. Motor only has 100K miles on it though.

Edit: now that I think about it some more - if the PCV was plugged would that pressurize the crank case and cause it to blow more oil. Like 100K miles on the engine is'nt that much.

Don't bother with the RapidFires...I had them in my car for about 2 years with no noticeable difference at all. The regular plugs will serve you fine.

With the symtoms that you are mentioning, fouled plugs, blue smoke at start up getting worse, sounds to me that the valve seals need changing. Should be a pretty easy fix. But still change the PCV valve first.

Pretty sure thats a common problem with the LG4's and the L69's.

-not that common with the pre-1986 engines- especially at only 100k

If the car is only driven sporadically with large gaps/periods between driving (i.e. a seasonal car and then only driven once a week in the "season") it can happen much faster due to the seals drying out. If the car is driven a couple times a week all year long- you wouldn't start to see this normally until at least 200k. This assumes of course you know the hole history on the car in question.

With an iron block/iron heads carb'd engine- all platinum plugs suck and foul too soon. The best performance-type plugs are the standard AC Delco Rapidfires (NOT platinum rapidfires)- for an R45TS replacement, they are labelled as the " #2 " Rapidfires.

Changed them all except 6 and 8 - have to raise the car to get those because of the headers.

Runs a little better but not much - still very rough at 2600 to 3000 rpm. Plugs wern't as bad as I thought once I got a look at them in better light.

Removed the PCV and really no blow by worth mentioning - exhaust is much cleaner with the PCV disconnected - think I might just scrap the PCV assembly altogether.

Keep trying I guess.

That means your probably not getting fresh air to the PCV system..Check to see your breather filter from the other pass side valve covers if it dirty.check the wires for resistance..the resistance/length should be in the archives somewhere. How does the plug look?smell?

my crankcase breather filter is a little oily and I just bought a new pcv so I'm guessing there's a clog in the outlet from the TBI to the pcv?
