Guys, I need help.
I've been around this board for a long time and learned alot off of some of you guys. I know alot of you by nick names on here, and I know alot of you know what you're talking about, which is why I think you can help me out.
I have a '96 suburban. RWD, 4L60E, 1500 series, 5.7L vortec engine.
My trans is TKO'd! I work at a scrap yard, and I have tons of 4L60E's in stock, but I'm not sure which I could use. Some of the 4L60e's came with a one-piece bellhousing, while other 4L60E's came with a two-piece bellhousing. When I type up an interchange on my computer @ work, it tells me that we don't have a tranny for my suburban.
What are the differences in some of these transmissions?
what alternatives do I have for replacement?
will a trans. from a v6 work for me?

As I have understood it- there is no significant difference (from a functional/mounting point of view) between bellhousings- just make sure you get one with a 90* Chevy mount flange. The V6 transmission is probably not a good bet- like most GM transmissions, V6 units vs. V8 units probably have fewer frictions installed and fail earlier behind a higher-output engine.
Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the "e"' 's electronics and what differences might exist there in the ECM hookup- and this might be the nature of your problem- i.e. plug incompatibility without some rewiring- I might suggest visiting a 4th gen site and see what they have to say about things (all 4th Gen autos got the 4L60E)...
