Re: MAF vs MAP

I had good luck with my stock MAF setup even after changing the cam with no chip change from stock. The increase in airflow is measured and the computer will adjust..within reason.
A MAP setup from what I know is much more sensitive to any changes and will require a new tune/chip for max performance.

Re: MAF vs MAP

I dropped in a map set up (90 engine) and like was just said it doesn't like major changes even some bolt ons come to think about it.
A couple less sensors..... so a little cheaper that way but most would say GM went backwards with that set up.
I mean just look at what the more current cars are using.

Re: MAF vs MAP

To put it simply, GM had MAF from 85-89, then MAP from 90-93, then MAF for the rest of its Pony car v8's. (to 02)

Generally Map is best for boosted applications

Re: MAF vs MAP

They both have strengths and weaknesses

MAF is better at adapting to bolt ons(without programming) since it measures the mass of incoming air and reacts to it. With MAP it doesnt measure actual air flow but have set parameters depending on how much vacuum the engine makes. Both systems depend on sensors which are basically the same in function.

MAP is better because of the faster processor and there are no restrictions given by a MAF since the MAF itself is the restriction.

have to agree. MAF is a pain when it breaks and costs alot to improve air flow thru (eg: bigger MAF unit)

My other cars use MAF last one broke cost me $450 to replace
