GTA Cone Filter...

I'm just wondering if any GTA or Firebird TPI owner have done the mod with a cone filter on the end of the rubber tube (coming from the MAF) in place of the stock air box?!? I got a size question.

I tried the K&N cone on mine. But I have a '91 so SD and not MAF. Where does your MAF sit ? Before the 90 degree elbow or after it ?

Having SD makes the cone a no brainer, just pulled all the factory tube-gunk off and attached the cone to the throttle body. Don't think that will work on a MAF setup ?

I tried it for a few weeks, got tired of the hissing noise and modified my factory unit instead (still not happy with the current solution). For what it is worth the cone DID make alot more power in the mid-range. Noticeable kick in the butt -- which means my factory setup is pretty lame.

I personally don't have a 90* bend as the Chevy's got a different style of intake tube.

The way it works with the MAF setup up for the Firebird side of the world though is one would remove the stock air box entirely (over by the front passenger side of the engine bay) and in it's place put a cone filter. My friend has it on his GTA but I haven't heard back from him yet on the measurements so I thought I would give you guys a shot.

I forgot the IROCs go over the front rad rack for air. One of the reasons I dumped the K&N cone-attached-to-the-throttle-body is it picks up hot air from behind the rad. The cone would work really well for an open air rod but not my Firebird -- it really needs cold air so I am working on something else.

Curious, have you seen the ram-air mod for IROCs posted in the tech pages ?

Yup, unless its something recent?!? I've thought about it But I think I'll stick with my mildly modded setup for now. I've heard many good things about it though.

Anyway, back to my original post...I accidently ordered the wrong cone filter (it's for something else, not the IROC) and it has a 3.5" tube opening (whereas the one I needed was 3"). If I bring it back, there's a $10 restocking fee so I prefer to sell it instead. The model number is RU3130. If it will fit a GTA then I'll post it in the classifieds.

Hey.... I am getting deja vus here... wasn't I haveing the same dilemma about a month ago? hehe.... I went with a filter that was a tight fit over top the stock rubber hose... I hardly tightened the clamp, because if I do, it'll fall out.... have to see it i guess. I will try to find the P/N I used..... I am pretty sure its the RU-3130.... but any 89mm filter should work if your outside diameter is the same as the GTA's

interesting approach

Interesting solution. Great closeup pic I might add. Check this pic out:

I cut the 'barrel' away from the stock filter housing and replaced the factory filter with a Holley Pro-Shot (I liked the matching blue colour), stuck the factory snorkel back together and bolted it all back in place.

Works ok but could be better as it sits in a dead air space. I was thinking of running a flexhose to the right fender and attaching a cone to it. That way it would get outside air.

I went to Karbelt and got an ***** cone filter....fits like it was made for it. And I built an aluminum shield around two sides of it to protect it from heat from the motor.

I was going to do something simlar to you palric, except I can not cut all around, because the lid on my box is held on by 3 clamps, so I'd have to leave 3 edges on it. I just felt the cone filter was easier, and this leaves me withthe factory air box in tact.

I pulled the stock air box, moved the charcoal canister and then installed the biggest K&N cone I could find. It fits well, and probably pulls more air than the stock air box. It does, however, pull hot underhood heat. If anyone needs the part number I can dig it up.

any 89mm K&N will work... look at the part numbers on here , and pick the filter you want.

Very cool...that means they both have the same 3.5" opening...Do you know how long yours is? The 3130 is seven inches in length. I just wanna make sure it's not too long.

The opening on my filter is about 94 mm. The code on the closed end of the filter is B035B4, and on the open end is F035A4. Hope that helps.

Thanks buddy, I'll have to check it when I get home. I'm probably just gonna return the filter anyway rather than go through the hasstle of reselling.

Re: GTA Cone Filter...

hey i was wondering if the cone is worth getting for performance...is it better than using the stock airbox with k&n rectangular filters...because the cone really would take in a lot of heat from the engine with the cone versus the airbox like someone mentioned

Re: GTA Cone Filter...

I felt a little more pull. It sound so much better too. I mounted it on a polished aluminum intake tube for better flow (and looks).
