i'm new to tpi so help me out, with a few simple mods how much hp can a tpi system handle? i know they have tq but what can you do to increase hp? i'm asking because i thought a 383 would be fun with tpi. thanks jason
the average tpi system can support up to well over 300hp if im not mistaken, but, in a 383 or 350 or any size engine I definatly suggest you invest in aftermarket intake manifold & runners. this will help air flow considerably.

The Hot Rod, 1985 TA: 4 bolt 350, ported and polished vortec heads with 3 angle valve job and screw in studs as well as guide plates, 1.6 roller rockers, cam, edelbrock vortect performer rpm intake, edelbrock 650 cfm carb, 1" 3/4' headers, custom exaust, etc. etc.
For 450-500 HP, i would suggest talking to John Millican about getting a modified LT1 intake. Will breathe great for higher horsepower than a ported TPI could, and for about the same or less money.

Agreed. A maxed out TPI (runners, manifold, TB, ported plenum) can probably support up to 350+ HP....but if you wanna go higher than that an LT1 intake would be great
Depends on the type of air metering system. A MAF car can support up to around 325hp. After this point the MAF can become a restriction to air flow. Speed density systems have no restriction to air flow and can theoretically support an unlimited amount of horsepower.
Yeah, stock TPI parts with some porting are good enough to make somewhere over 300hp and have been on some low 13 second cars and even beyond with some magic. I'm interested to see what can be done with a siamesed stock base and stock runners, since theoretcially you don't need large tube runners with a siamesed base since you have 2 for each hole to breath through now.
But on a big inch motor stock TPI wouldn't be too much fun.

Isn't there a guy on here running like a 12.5 w/ a TPI setup? I can't remember his name though. He's a teacher...and has owned the car since new...that's all i remember from his site.
Assuming a 18% drivetrain loss, I'm making about 330 hp at the crank with a completely stock TPI setup, and a MAF sensor. I think that the TPI can make a lot more power than most people think it can, but it's really finicky.

That would be Mike Davis. He ran his fastest time of 11.94 with a Long Tub Runner setup. Of course that was a ported plenum, AS&M runners, and Edelbrock siamesed intake(the holes on this siamesed edelbrock are huge, I know cause i have it, but not currently installed). Mike has since gone to another form of EFI. He also is Heavy into Prom Tuning.
The Vortec setup with PROM calibration would be a nice motor and have 400+HP, but it is still at 4800RPMs due to the "Tuned" runner length. HTHs

Please don't. Stick with MPFI. A well tuned aftermarket MPFI setup with proper matched injectors can support up to 600hp. Sure it's expensive, but you'll be more happy with it.

well then wait. But dont put a carb on it or you wont be happy. I'm in college (junior) and I've just been adding to my car during the summers. Be patient....slapping a carb on isn't the solution.
Theres a 454 TBI setup that came on the early 90's (i think early 90's?) 454 SS chevy trucks. You can find those easily on ebay. There's also some aftermarket setups you could use, but they cost some $$$$$
Now those aftermarket systems are a different story. If you read any chevy mags. or such, there's always a guy w/ a fuel injected big block making MUCH power. Problem is that those systems is that they cost 2-3 grand! So carb the obvious choice on a BB...at least for the average guy.
