Please help me identify what year L98 this is

Hello! I recently bought a L98 5.7ltr TPI motor. Problem was, the guy selling it didnt know what year car it came from. Can you help me identify what year L98 this is? I looked at the back part of the motor right behind the TPI setup on the side and it says 5.7. Did different year L98's come with different TPI setup? Or were they all pretty much the same? I'm just wondering because this will be going into my 90 RS with a L03 and the L98 dosnt look like its complete yet. I will have to find the ECU and stuff from another car. Thank guys!!

Shawn

Is it Speed Density(91-92) or MAF(86-90)? ON the speed density setup, on the passanger side of the plenum will be a map sensor, MAF doesn't have it there. Also, I say 86 becuase no f-body in 85 came with a 5.7.

Hope that helps.

Also, did it come with the accessories? Do you know if it had a V belt or Serpentine setup? That could help narrow it down more.

Its a MAF. He is sold it with the painless wiring harness and a BBK 58mm MAF. Not sure on the type of belt. I'll have to check it out. It looks like when they removed it, they unloosened everything they could ... but cut everything else ... so its missing some stuff

Well, if its a 5.7 TPI w/ MAF then it is either a 87, 88, or 89. Pretty much the same motor. Same heads, cam , etc. Only diference will be the cold start injector. Does it have one one it. It would be on the driver's side and would plug into the runner.

Ok, so I should be on the lookout for ECM's from 87-89 L98 Camaro's.

What do you guys think about this one on ebay? good ecm used in the 1986-89 tuned port engines, 305 and 350 engines, Camaro's, Firebird's and Corvettes. The ecm # is 1227165 and remanufactured by General Motors. Would that ECM work? THANKS!!

Yeah, the 165 is the ECM that you want. This ECM was used on all TPI cars from 86-89, including the 305s. It shouldn't be more than $50 for a used one on ebay or a local bone yard.

The more important thing is the chip. If your car has VATS, then you'll need an 88 or 89 L98 f-body chip depending on whether your motor has the cold start injector. If it does have it, you'll want the 88. If you don't have the CSI, then you'll want an 89.

Of course, if you're burning your own stuff, none of that matters.
