Guy's I know I cant spell!!
they are both a waste of money. Over the weekend I saw a dyno test done on a mid 90s Impalla SS with the LT1 on Horsepower TV. Before and after results showed no difference whatsoever. Same car, same dyno same day, same hour, same conditions.
That was actually a good episode...I really appreciated the back to back dyno testing...most of these type of shows just talk...but this episode actually helped me make decisions on parts I was thinking of buying...
Is that why they sell it based on increasing power? We've seen flow tests where the air foil increased flow through the throttle body, that's got to be good for something.
did you guys ever think that maybe the airfoil works better when the car is say cruising at 60, i mean on a dyno there isnt really alot of air being pushed in the cars face (yea they have a fan but thats not helping all that much) so the throttle body is just sucking in the air but when at speed it just ingests the air and i think thats when/where the airfoil does its job and reduces the turbulence and therefor increasing flow of the air going into the throttlebody. just something to think about.
Yeah it is good for horses when your going fast enough to create the turbulence into the throttle body... if your on a dyno it wont register because no air is being forced into the engine like it would be if you were on the highway unless your at SLP where they have a huge *** fan that blows air at the car simulating if the car were traveling
The airfoil's properties will not be seen until the worst restriction in the intake system is addressed. A lot things need to be done first, like the MAF screens and the airbox. The plenum and runners themselves are huge restrictions on 350's.
1) I've seen a few guys totally cut out the air boxes (the part underneath of the filters) to increse air flow. Now if I did this would I have a problem with water entering, or touching the new KNs? And to cut this out, would a dremel be good?
2) As far as the screen(s) on the maff, is there one or two of them? Is it unsafe to remove these screen(s), because I am aware of how much $ a new maff costs, and I really wouldn't want to screw it up by removing the screen(s).
So what kind of HP/Fuel eco. gains can I expect from cutting the air box, throwing in some K&Ns, removing the maff screens, and adding an air foil? Thanks. -89IRO
My opinion, just remove the (4) Baflles below the air filters in the air box and leave your Maf alone. No significant HP or performace gains will be made by these items. Now thr PRO & CON replies will start....
I don't know if cutting the MAF, airbox, and adding all the little things really helps out alot, but all to gether, they are probably worth a little bit. ???
Like mentioned, the rest of the intake needs to be worked as well, no point in opening a floodgate if there is a bottleneck right down stream.
i cut 2 big windows in the box..and left a half inch between the holes...i want to say that i gained power but im sure it was all in my head..however, i DID infact notice an increase in throttle response, which is fine aswell for 5 mins worth of work...
the K&N was not in my head, i gained 18 hp with it AND the holes in the box..i have not installed an air foil. i have heard itll gain like 10 cfm?..but its purpose IMO, is to increase throttle response, which im sure it does..
another free mod is to grind down the egr walls right behind the throttle body in the plenum...this may seem wierd, but it sounded like it changed my idle..you know how the L98 idles nice and smooth...well my car idles a little rough because its a G92 LB9, so when i ground down the walls the idle went a litte rougher..(i dont mean rough as a bad way...it sounded really good even though it was internally stock..)...id would have to say i gained a good 10-15 Hp...it felt quite a bit crisper and it pulled a litter better on top...
also if u do plan on buying a airfoil, id suggest spending another 2 bucks or so and converting to a AFPR
that combined with the K&N, holes in the airbox, ground EGR walls, and the AFPR, id be fairly confident in sayin youd gain a peak of 40-50 hp
people have documented gains of 30+ on fuel pressure adjustment alone
Well, I'll at least take a look at the maff, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna do that. As for the air boxes, do you mean you didn't cut them out completely, you just cut out a portion of them? I've already taken out the two baffles in each box that are held in with screws. I wonder if I can just use a drill to drill out some holes in it, instead of cutting it with a dremel. Airfoil- don't know about that one because I'm not getting it from jegs or summit (where I will get my KNs) becasue their's are too expensive, so either ecklers, or slp, but then that means an extra shipping charge for me, so we'll see. Thanks for the help guys. -89IRO
I just did the coolant bypass to the TB and I was pleased with the results. I can't say I really noticed much except that now I can touch the throttle body without burning my hand (which must be good for the TB). However, I did notice quicker throttle response when I used that Valvoline synthetic TB cleaner. This stuff just dissolved all the carbon build-up in the TB, in front of and behind the blades. I'm sure any good cleaner would work, but I got this stuff free, so I used it. Oh, and it came with a big swab which made it easy to clean. My question is about the maff screen(s). I know it has two screens, but I only want to remove the one closest to the TB. It is easy to get to, but how to I remove it? It looks like it can just pop off, but I didn't want to mess with it since that is an expensive part. Will it hurt anything if I remove the screen closest to the TB? Thanks. -89IRO
