Removing smog pump set up on my GTA???

I see my 88 GTA still has the smog pump and all the emissions stuff that goes with the pump.Is there any horse power gain by removing it and if so how do you remove it or where can you get it removed. If the smog equipment ever goes bad what kind of problems can it cause for your car.Could it cause any problems like you car smoking out of the exhaust?

Mine fit fine using the diagram and recommended belt. Do you have any underdrive pulleys?

I don't think a smog pump would make it smoke. I suppose it could smoke if it were losing a bearing, for a short time, but it would soon lock up and stop turning.

When my bearings went on the pump, it sounded like a busted valve train. Scared the **** outta me. I threw that thing in the trash 2 years ago and haven't looked back..

Re: Removing smog pupm set up on my GTA???

Hello, I'm planning to put some headers on my 5.7 88 GTA, I just want to know if there is any problem if I don't put the little pipes on the manifolds for the smog. or what would be the right headers to use.

Removal of the smog pump depends on your local/county/state inspection and emission requirements.

There is no hp gain.

There's nothing a smog pump can do to make excess exhaust - but a seized bearing would make the belt smoke and burn through.

Re: Removing smog pupm set up on my GTA???

The smog pump is drag on the engine, it's going to free up a few horsepower. It's not dramatic but it adds up, and I'm also removing the AC. I have a 406 in the Iroc, been raining all week couldn't go try it out. More time for tuning I say!

If you remove the AIR pump and the pipes, will you have any issues with the cats running hotter since there is no air being forced in them.....and will you have a SES light come on?

No issues at all with removing them and I did the pump delete and never had ses light come on even after a 6 hour trip but make sure you dont have emission testing

Re: Removing smog pupm set up on my GTA???

Rob,

I heard something here on TG that when you dont have AIR going to your cats and manifolds that the ECM doesnt send as much fuel to the injectors which makes the car run slightly lean....If it runs lean, then you dont have as much power...correct?

No emission testing in Maryland IF the car is 20 years old AND you register it as a Historic car......which I have done.

Re: Removing smog pupm set up on my GTA???

The bad thing about Michigan is the rust and the bumpy roads.
The good thing is the abundance of cars for sale, and the best part:
NO EMISSIONS TESTING. It's a must to remove the catalytic converters.

Actually, it's not "removing" cats on a third gen you must be ADDING a catalytic converter every time you do exhaust. Surely the exhaust is not original on a 1980's car?

From my experience after I did some upgrading I noticed more power but worse gas mileage. I dont think I am running lean but I dont know for sure all I know is my car is fairly quick now

That sounds right....more fuel in the cylinder makes more power and less fuel economy. Then again....who cares about fuel economy with these 20 year old muscle cars....hahaha.

Did you have your AIR hooked up or just capped off the cat tube?

Re: Removing smog pupm set up on my GTA???

The only way it should affect your fuel/air ratio is if your diverter valve was bad. Mine was, so it always let some air into the exhaust manifolds. Being before the oxygen sensor, made the car think it was running lean so the computer adjusted it to be too rich.

I have headers and removed the cats but when the exhaust was removed for the headers noticed the cats were empty anyways no point to have empty cats. I did like my good gas mileage because my car is a daily driver but I fixed the issue, I moved a block away from work I am doing my part in not giving the oil companies very much of my money lol
