can i do anything with the stock MAF to get it to flow a bit more? cuz they flow like only 670 cfm stock...what should i do? can you port them out? and how? i'm going to desreen it too....why don't they make a bigger housing like they have for the ls1's...
Because you likely don't need it. IT isn't the restriction you think it is, and even if you remove it entirely, the actual restrictions in the system will still be present. Take a ruler some paper and a few lessons from geometry and you'll figure out the exact same thing and where as well.
i didn't do to good in geomtry..haha...but i got a twin 58mm throttle body, HSR intake, built heads, and a pretty big cam...i just want to make sure i'm not starving the engine...it'll be about 400 HP...you think i'll be fine with just descreening it?
whats a wells unit..did a search and found nothin...are they expensive? i just paid during the summer 450 bucks for a new computer and MAF sensor, long story...had something to do with the car having a 350 vette motor, 305 computer, and no intake sensor whats so ever...so i'd like to keep the one i have now without spending anymore money just because i already have money invested into it...i read a guy was running 10's with a stock MAF except for descreening...i think i'll be fine if i descreen it...
A lot of us here locally in Southern California have been running modified MAFs with no problem. Mine has been descreened, the fins cut and has been that way since 1991. I believe Vincent Z28 has had his modified longer than that. I don't know of anyone around here that has had a problem.
With your set up I would do it in a heartbeat. It very well could be holding you back. It certainly is the weak spot in your intake system depending on what air filter you have . Allen

One guy was in the 9's with a stock MAF and a 305. I've got video. Maybe the L98s need to be descreened to get there?
Be advised that you may experience part-throttle problems. If you do all your driving at WOT, you'll be fine. Then again, the ECM ignores the MAF at WOT, so you might as well remove the MAF rather than just the screens. Maybe the previous owner had it right.
If you decide to remove the screen(s), try to do it in a manner that will allow you to replace them. The correct method would be to split the MAF along the factory parting lines, then remove the screen and support frame as a unit.
If you're looking for a Wells MAF, Farm & Fleet can order one through Blain's (I'm not sure if Mill's can order them, however), or any CarQuest can get them. You're lucky you're so close to Wisconsin.
That guy in the 9's is running a turbo with massive boost..anything with enough boost will run fast.
It is a proven mod to port the MAF ...but it has been know to cause some problemswith reliability. A stock MAF flows~540cfm..no screens is about 650ish and ported is 730cfm.
In my personal experince with the wells unit,it did not like my cold air induction set-up I had..it ran poor up top,and I'm not the only one with that problem. With the screens off my MAF I actually picked up throttle response..TPI is based more on velocity then actuall cfm flow and those screens just kill velocity.
But it is a risk mod....I would try to find a used one for back up,and if this one gives you trouble down the youll have one.
Also make sure your burn-off relay is running good.
Has anyone tried cutting the tube off the MAF and inserting it into a new larger pipe and gluing, or whatever, it in place close to center of the pipe?

Don't get me started... someone went to thr trouble of even getting in touch with manufacturers for the tubing and for the boards. In the end...not worth the trouble.

but out here in the west coast like AZ, its already hot
as hell out here and it keeps the sensor clean just baking in the parking lot .. just my personal expierence. That and theres no moisture in the desert air. I descreened mine and it idles and
drives fine in normal situations
Maybe they last a tad longer in warmer parts of the country?
How about if the screen is removed from the one side only thus being able to stop unwanted particles? Will removing the screen on the fron side only increase air flow?
If both were removed what hp gain can be expected?
The horsepower gains will depend on the mods to your engine. With a stock or near stock engine you may not see any gains. The more airflow your engine is wanting the more horsepower gains you will see. Allen
