Dynoed Full Bolton L98

just got back from the dyno. The car has pretty much ever bolton, still has stock heads and cam. Best pull made 251.29 HP and 293.34 Max Torque at the wheels... Looks like I'll be needing cam and heads to see 300 RWHP....

Interesting. At first I thought this was still with TPI intake but I see you are running the super ram and big base. For comparison my L98 all stock except SLP 1 3/4 headers and pullies gave me 229hp/330ft lbs (SAE correction) at the rear wheels.

Heads and cam with your intake and you will have a monster though.

Really sharp looking car BTW.

Looks like Super Ram really lowers your torque to get that HP up. I pulled 214/312 bone stock. That top end should feel pretty nice!

Did you measure the A/F with a wideband, or did you calibrate it well before the dyno pulls? If I had to guess, I'd say you're on a Mustang dyno (dynojets have a fudge factor that boosts the numbers).

The ARAP bin isn't necessarily the best thing for your engine (iron heads). It uses the knock sensor extensively, which can over-retard. ARAP has good fueling though, so they say, but did you change the injector constants to compensate for your fuel pressure? The ARAP PE is still quite rich, and targets about 11.9:1. With the extra fuel, it's richer of course. I've found peak torque with rich mixtures - high 11's, low 12's, and peak power with mid to high 12's.

I got 251/318 with the setup in my sig. It's totally untunned so far and the LS1 cars that day were down 10 or so HP because of the 32 degree weather. I figure I cna tune it and on a good day hit maybe 265-270 ?

Good numbers man ! I couldn't get mine under a 14.4@95 ( 3 people in the car and bald tires)

Why would you race with three people in the car? Just curious? You could prolly get your times down that way for starters. My car Ran 14.0's with just headers and a catback, 3.27's. I would like to think that making 250 ish hp would drop me more than 1/10th.

with those mods i would like to think it will trap better than 100mph.. but i'm not sure of the weather/alitude down in southern cali. up near pittsburgh, my car has done 13.98 at 100.9mph with just shortie headers and 3inch exhaust, 2800 stall. 3.27 gearing. i would think full TPI bolt ons, i might hit 103mph, maybe more in goood conditions

That's a really interesting graph. Even with the Super Ram and all the goodies, peak power still comes in at 4500-4700 RPM and rolls off like a LTR intake. The roll off is probably not as severe as the LTR setup though. The heads and cam really hold our cars back over 4800 RPM.

Yep, I think the stock cam has a lot to do with the peak at 4600. Cam and heads will wake that car up.

nvmd, 104 mph is pretty dang good for a 'tpi' setup. If you had the stock tpi you would run mid 13s but have some killer 1/8th mile times

What do you you cross the 1/4 at as far as rpm goes?

Hes got a Lingenfelter Super Ram intake. TPI will not trap 104 with a stock cam. If he kept his TPI set up he would probably run close to the same times as me.

an fbody TPI maybe, but not a Vette. my own 89' Vette with boltons went 104.79mph without lifting a valve cover. some of the full bolton L98 Vettes have hit 108/109mph with stock heads/cam

I wonder how much difference a cam change and a good tune would net you. Thatd be great if you did that with the stock heads... and find theyr limitations. OTOH theres no reason to spend the time / $ on the tune if your getting heads as well. Either way good numbers, cant wait to see those heads and a new cam numbers

Wish I had those #'s to show before a head/cam swap.
I pulled 200/248 with headers/exhaust/intake mods.

Your lighter/delete optioned Formula, Superram, 1.6rr's and pullies gave you 50 more hp and 45 more tq. Pretty cool.

Doubt even with heads/cam I'll reach 300 at the wheels.

Yeah I don't get it either why mine is so low in comparison.
A couple guys are saying they've gotten over 300 tq with minimal mods, but then TPI-Formula350- says he got like 290's with every bolt-on.
Either people are using different dyno's or are trying to make the "correction" to their numbers based on some forumla they heard.

remember this # are at the rear wheels..... you lose approx. 20% going through the drive train. so his 248 TQ would be around 298 TQ at the flywheel. Mine would be around 350ish TQ ......

Ive had my L98 dynoed four times. The most recent numbers were 249 rwh and 334 lb ft. I have close to full bolt ons, along with the tpi intake which has been modded to the max.

249x100/80= 311 hp
334x100/80= 417 lb ft

Here is the formula I used to determine crank power. These numbers ARE high but it gives an idea of crank power if infact the 700R4 yeilds a 20 percent loss

Maybe your long tube runners are helping in the TQ dept? I'm sure my SuperRam would like more cam to make more HP and TQ at a highwer RPM.

This is true, and I've heard upwards of 20-22% drivetrain loss for autos, 18-20% for manuals.
What I don't understand though, is even after the calc. 298 TQ flywheel, aren't the stock #'s around 330??

This is also true and what I've seen, so how did I only pull 200 HP WITH headers/exhaust/intake?

I know the GTA is heavy and fully loaded, and I know mine was in good tune, but damn, that's a low dyno to me it seems.

Its more like 15% for manuals. 20% is about right for an auto. People tend to add a few extra numbers to get a bigger number.

I don't even try to guess what the corrected may be or drivetrain losses, people that do that are just trying to see a nice #.
Either way 15-20-25%, my numbers seem lower than most posted and to what is advertised for factory #'s.

The car is in excellent shape, 60K on it, lots of upgraded parts, and I even had some minor chip tuning as well.
----------
Track mph's were always 95-96. Not really high.
It drives, runs strong, tune didn't show anything out of the ordinary.

This is what my old Formula dyno'd. Had just about every bolt on, bad plug wires and running way lean.

I think it should have dyno'd much higher RWHP. Hmmmm....

BTW, your Formula still looks damn good!
