A stock lower intake can be ported to flow more than an aftermarket base, it is when you take an aftermarket base and port that when you get bigger gains. Stock ported or aftermarket is fine for most apps. Edelbrock is probably the best one out there for price and quality. TPIS sells one that is already ported and leaves room for more porting, but you are looking to spend some good money. Best runners out there are AS&M/TPIS LTRs hands down. Heads? best bang for the buck, could be the edelbrocks. Don't know much about the new TFs but have been hearing good things about them. Cam, well, that's all up to you and how far you want to go. You have an auto so you want to look into TCs, one of the best mods you could do. Are you keeping the 305 or going bigger?
i keep hearing GREAT things about the factory production vortec heads..flow just as much as the e-brocks for A LOT LESS. There is suppose to be a TPI manifold coming out for these heads....it will kinda set up like the e-brock base..i think i'm going with this setup when i do my engine rebuild

If you had a 350 I'd push for an intake upgrade, but for a 305 I feel that the stock pieces will work just fine. Remember, the problem with the 350 TPI intake design is...well, it wasn't designed for the 350, it was designed for the 305. GM just took the 305 intake, got slightly larger injectors, and threw it on the 350 as sort of a last minute kind of thing. But, since you haver a 305, the intake was designed for your engine and you don't have to worry about any of this.
If you're looking to spend money do it on the exhaust side. Or do the Vigilante thing, it's an awesome product.
For a stocker 305, skip the big heads. Won't fit, won't work, wait until you can swing in a 350.
All the posts about waking up a 305 are right on ... the factory cam is a peanut, the exhaust is corked, the tc is too tight, the chip is conservative ... unhook these clips on the factory supplied F-Car chastity belt and you can really have a good time.
There is (or was) a good section in the archive about "steps to hop up your thirdgen" Most of them are cheap and reasonable. Try them first before you lay out the big dollars (probably have to do most of them anyway!)
As everyone said, trying to get more air into that 305 than it will conceivably take isn't going to heed any positive results. Either way you're going to realize that your bottleneck is the heads or the lack of displacement. LTR's, ported plenum and ported or aftermarket base are plenty for a 305 that isn't seeing over 6K.
Even still, a 350 with a somewhat mild head and cam combo will spin to 5500-6K with that setup. If you're striving for more HP throughout the range, then a RamJet or Superram/miniram would be in order but ONLY ON A HIGHER DISPLACEMENT MOTOR! On your 305, it'd be nothing but a waste of aluminum and bloody knuckles. You could spin to 7K and still make power, but you'd be floating the valves and rocketing the crank by then anyway. Systems approach is how you win races.
