Though your tach may have a 6,000 rpm redline, your TPI system will run out of breath above 5,000 rpm by fact of its design.

Car: 85 IROC-Z / 88 GTA
Engine: 403 LSx (Pending) / 355 Tuned Port
Transmission: T56 Magnum (Pending) / T5
Axle/Gears: 3.42 / ?
The stock tachs in the 85 TPI cars yellowed at 5,000 and redlined at 5,500. Only the v6 cars had a 6,000 rpm redline tach. If yours is a 6k, it was swapped with a V6 tach.

The t/a I pulled the motor had low miles and very unmolested. The tach does redline at 6000rpm and really seems original. The car was bought at an auction and sent to salvage. It sat in the back until the engine was sold to me.At the same time I got the guages and much more.

The only TPI that I've ever seen redline that high was a balanced and blueprinted 87 TA with a 305/5 spd that was a former players race car and that thing pulled hard til about 6500 RPM

"The stock tachs in the 85 TPI cars yellowed at 5,000 and redlined at 5,500."

85 was an oddball year. The tach DID redline at 6000, I owned one myself. It shifted there at WOT all by itself too, and that particular car had never been modified at all besides self destruction. The reason was the cam, 85 had the 'HO' cam, same cam that came in the L69 cars, which were conservatively rated at 190HP.

BTW I would not run it to that redline, it will just slow you down and kill the engine in time if its all stock.

Gee -that's funny - Canadian Players G.M. cars were rev-limited to 5800 RPM, and certainly dont pull to 6500 rpm. I know. I have one.

Would the valve springs and or ecm+chip be different for it to redline at 6000?
