I've been to three different speed shops and i've been searching k&n.com jegs.com and summit.com but i cannot find the airfilter i'm looking for. it is just a basic cone filter that goes straight on the throttle body, what filter do you use? and i need a part# for summit or k&n.
Ive been debating getting one of these for a long time.
I currently run the stock dual snorkel with k&ns and completely gutted airbox underneath.
To me i think the stock dual snorkel brings in cooler air but not as much because of how much restriction there is when the tubes flatten out and bend up and then go into the TB.
The cone filter i think would bring in much more air but it would be hotter of course...
I have drove around with the snorkel off and felt a difference...but then again im not sure how this would do all the time sense it would be pulling in hot air only after awhile.
Im up in the air, they are not that expensive i think i may get one, i also like how they clean up the engine bay more.
I did back to back comparison runs at Byron dragstrip with a crappy CAI and then just the K&N on the TB. The CAI run had a better run by .1 seconds. Of course the filter on the TB has a nice sound to it. Figure out what's more important to you. A clean engine bay is nice.
They used the K&N part number...
I don't remember for sure, I think its something like RC 5000 for the small one and rc 5050 for the bigger one, check the K&N site...
the cone in the summitt link is oval... look for a circular cone to fit onto your MAF. K&N makes one ... I'm using one that the PO installed.
measure the opening on the MAF (think it's 4 inch ... could be 3inch, don't remember what size pipe I bought for the intake) or take it in with you when the parts store is slow...
I have one like above, can't post photo as I have it already posted in another thread, put if you check my profile and look at my posts you will see the thread with photo of what to do. Simply, take off round canister where round stock air filter goes and simply push in air cone to opening tubing ( a bit of wiggling ) and tighten it to tubing with screw brace ( on air filter ) and you have a cold air system for the price of a k & n air cone. No need to pay 300 or more for the same setup. Hope this helps. Andrew
1000cfm for the 5050???????
Maybe I should just go that route for now.
I'm trying to get a 1100+cfm filter from K&N. They got back to me on 2 different filters that fit my specs except for the length. The 2 filters they mentioned were 12 and 14 inches long. Way too long for my plans.
I guess i'm going to have to look into how to calculate my cfm needs. Maybe the 5050 will serve me fine.
Did you notice more noise when you swapped to that filter? I have one on my 82 corvette (TPI Swap) and it's driving me nuts.
I had a question, could one of these K&N cone filters cause your TPI to run differently? Maybe play tricks with the air temp sensor because it's constantly pulling hot air?
I'm going to figure out a way to make a cold air system and try to pull air from the front of the car.
Yes, the noise is different... The stock setup isn't an open element, long tube, plastic bucket, etc...
It does sound different with the K&N filter... I have an air foil and I ran a coolant bypass too...
Yes, the air is warmer than with the stock setup, but if the temp sensor is working right, should not be a problem. Mine runs like a top...
Next is installing a Procharger, so the filter moves from infront of the engine to over the headers, yikes! I'm gonna see if I can devise a way to suck in cold air from the Trans Am / Formula Buldge Hood...
cool ....thanks for the reply I may go ahead and still come up with something to remote mount a breather. arizonatpi sells everything I need to fab something
I've used both. The stock filter was 1/10th quicker in the quarter mile but the open element on the TB sounded better.
Can this kinda set up be used in an 86 iroc? My car has a MAF sensor and im not sure what will happen if i disconnect it and run a cone filter straight off the TPI. Any suggestions?

If you just take off your MAF your car will run like a pile of poop. When you see people with only the cone they have a 91' or 92' ecm (correct me if I am wrong on the years) and those years did not need a MAF
I have an idea which may or may not work for your turbo setup or for anyone wanting a maximum effect cai for racing.IF you can get away with it ,it would be a cool idea for the street but may look a little weird.
First off you would have to move your battery to the trunk on a camaro, which i plan to do.Next I want to run the cai intake track to the battery tray area as we have seen so many times. Then with a cut off wheel or some kind of dremel enlarge the area behind the highbeam light so you can remove the light and run the intake pipe through the hole and mount your ,large as you can find, cone filter.
For me this would be a track only mod.The headlight bucket seems to me to be a great place to get alot of cold air slammed into the filter.Just an idea.
