MY 1990 GTA's Fuel piump went out. I have dropped the tank, but what a nightmare that was. Basically i dropped the rear end and had to cut out the muffler. My question, is ther an easier way? I just can't belive what a hassle. Of course i all had to work with is one jack and 2 jack stands
I am going to replace the sending unit as well because there is no way i feel like dropping the tank again. I am also wondering about the pump. I wnat one as close to the orignal (quality) as possible. How are the ones from atozone, advance, napa? Should I buy a Delco?
I just Do not want to do this for awhile.
I would pick one up from a local GM dealership service departartment, ACDelco
I have never replaced a fuel pump in a thirdgen but I have heard that you can cut the rear floor pan out directly above the fuel tank and then weld it back in after the job is finished.
I would cut it out, but that would hurt me more than the car. I just would hate to cut in to the car. May be if it was a car that i did not care about, but there is nothing like the Original Body. Not only that, but i have no welder, and i do not like messing with heat near the tank.
I've done two pumps so far and thats basically what needs to be done. Drop the rear end and exhaust all the way. Even though it seems like more work, in the end it is easier and actually saves time.
Glad to see you have the sense to not cut up the car. Since they're such a PITA to replace, go with either a genuine AC Delco pump or a Walbro. The cheap ones go bad in less than a year a lot of times. Be careful where you buy a Walbro if you decide to go that route. Ebay is flooded with fake, Chinese pumps that are intentionally made to look almost exactly like the real Walbro pump. Go to www.racetronix.com for a Walbro. Theirs are the real deal, plus they offer a really nice wiring upgrade kit to go with the pump if that's something you'd be interested in. Either the 190 lph, or the 255 lph unit will work great for your car. The 255 model will support just about any mod you'll do to the car. Most parts stores can get the AC Delco pump, but you have to specify it. The first one they pull up on the computer is usually the cheap one.

I will have to look in to the Walbro. I knew they made a lot of the carbs for lawn, but i had no i deat that they made fuel pumps. I had debated on Ac Delco or Bosch. Bosch becasue that was suppose to be a upgrade. They told me that the bosch was a Turbine. I will definitely look into the Walbro though.
that's where I bought my Walbro pump, and I would order through him again. I previously bought one through Racetronix, and already had the hot wire kit, so I just needed a pump. If you want the HotWire kit, I definitely recommend Racetronix as well.
also, when installing the fuel pump, if there is a pulsator on the sending unit, then remove the pulsator and replace it with the short piece of rubber hose that usually comes in the box with pump. this will save you from needing to remove the tank a second time due to fuel pressure bleed down. the pulsator is notorius for causing fuel pressure to bleed down when parked.

Right on. I'm glad you posted that. I left the pulsator out when I put my Walbro in because I too thought it might cause pressure problems. I didn't like the idea that it just pushes on the pipe and the pump. I like the idea of a couple of worm gear clamps and a short piece of high pressure hose better. It's good to know I'm not the only one who decided to leave it sitting on the workbench instead of in the tank.

Yes,
I Decided to go with the Bosch. I was thinking of the Walbro, but i did not want to modify my wiring. I also liked the fact that the bosch was bought locally, and that it has a lifetime warranty.
In the instructions it did say to remove the pulsator because it did not need it because it is a turbine.
So, New sending unit and fuel pump installed. I should be set for at leat another 17 years. LOL
Either Racetronix or AutoPerformance that I listed, supply a plug and play harness for the Walbro pump to plug into the factory harness in the tank
Same here. The place I bought mine from didn't have as fancy of a kit as Racetronix offers, but the Walbro I bought was listed for 82-92 f-body, and it came with a simple adapter harness too. Also came with about 6" of high pressure hose, two worm gear clamps, rubber insulator boot, and a fine mesh strainer/pickup.
