The early 1985 TPI used an 8-bit processor ECM, and the very few TPIs released late in the model year used the newer processor and controls. The old P/N is 1226870, and the newer ECM is P/N 1227165, but you need to be very careful to get an ECM designed for a TPI, since the carbed engines also used the 1227165 with different firmware and PROM.
Obviously, the two are not interchangable. The older style had a piggybacked module to interpret the MAF signals and create a burnoff cycle after engine shutdown. The newer ECM lacks this module since the ECM performs this function directly. The MAF sensors are different as well.
The correct ECM for an '86 TPI auto should be Service Part No. 1227165AUM.
