edelbrock tpi vortec intake .. do i need egr system to run?

hey ..

i got a 1991 camaro with a 305 tpi that i just built

i put on summit vortec heads, hooker 2055 headers, edelbrock vortec tpi intake manifold (same as scoggin dickey) .. comp cam .. and some other things ..

neways ..

i was wondering .. i have the external egr blocked off for now .. will it still run with out the egr system .. i saw some things about a messed up egr valve will cause it to not idle

also i have taken off the catalytic converter to make room for the 3" y pipe so i can reduce it to the cat-back 2 1/2 for now untill i get a full 3" system .. do i need the air pipe .. i could reweld it into the y pipe ..

would any of these things cause driveability problems b/c if not ill just fix them next year when i need emmissions .

thanks ..

EGR. If you block it off properly, it will run. Usually its when the EGR sticks open it causes running problems.

Honestly, its easier to hook the stuff up the first time. Esp the egr so you dont have to take the intake all back apart. (now I see why people bitch about this intake).

As long as there are no intake or exhaust leaks, it should run OK, but you'll have to tune it to your combo, and maybe re-tune when you install the smog equipment. The missing EGR will allow you to run more spark advance, but the Vortec style heads don't need it, so they pay very little penalty for having an EGR compared to "old SBC" style heads.

Missing the catalytic converter will do nothing as long as a pipe is put in. Gutting it often causes a turbulent dead spot in your exhaust. You will not loose any noticeable power by installing a high-flow cat.

Re: edelbrock tpi vortec intake .. do i need egr system to run?

ive blocked off the "external egr" path with the supplied plate and high temp rtv .. i wont have to take the intake off to put on the egr pipe b/c its at the rear of the manifold infront of the distributor..

yea .. ive heard a bunch of complaints about this intake manifold but ive had no problems with it except having to modify the coil bracket .. but if you can build a motor then you should be able to do easy stuff like that ... other than that is a nice product .. im happy with it ..

i didnt "gut" the cat .. ive thrown it out completly and connected the 3" y pipe straight up the the cat back flowmaster system i got .. but im going to keep the air tube on it ..

so i guess it should run fine then .. just need to tune it later and then put a high flow cat and egr supply to the intake manifold later when i have to get emmisions ..

thanks again,

adrian
