Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the stock heads will support .480 lift. Check this out: http://www.compcams.com/technical/Ca...67_226-227.pdf
anything with 114 degrees LSA and around .480 LIFT would be great as long as it is hydraulic roller, considering you have an 88 block.
I would highly recommend the TPX262HR-14. It has .486/.480 lift, 210/218 duration on a 114 LSA which would really wake your motor up. If you click the link its about midway down under the designated TPI POWER EXTREME camshafts.
Daniel is right, it will handle .480. i have the comp 08-302-8 in my 305, .08 shave on the head and a .20 gasket and im at about 10.41 comp.480/480,210/220,112
i would sugguest the 08-300-8, it reqs no tuning and will do PLENTY for your 305. id drop in new springs while im at it, 981-16 is what it recommends. this cam is 450/480,206/210,112. dropped this in my friend 88 GTA 350 car and it worked superb.

man .. i wanted to get the 08-302-8 for my 305 that i just rebuilt ... but summit said it was discontinued or some b/s .. instead i got the 08-501-8 which is what comp recomended for my setup ..
but then again .. im runnig summit racing vortec heads (up to .520 lift / bigger valves) .. edelbrock vortec tpi intake manifold .. hooker 2055 headers / y pipe ... taylor 8mm wires .. etc ..
im almost done puttin it all back together ..might start it today .. so ill let yall how my cam is ..

Adrians91Z28, lets just say i know for a fact and first hand that cam isnt discontinued.
Dennis, if you dont have knowledge of how to tune or have access to someone that can and is good at tuning id go with the 08-300-8. no tuning reqd, good street manners and that is formost as too much cam cam make for a bear of a car and thats no good for a daily driver. also, with a EFI system the "chop" will sound much diff than a carbed car. EFI dosent do well (on the avg) with a LSA lower than 112.

yea .. thats what i figured .. its just i bought a pos edelbrock cam at summit before i did ANY research on building 305's .. haha .. came to find out it was a smaller cam than stock ..
so i went to exchange it and they told me some crap about they cant get it from comp or something ...
but i got the comp cams 08-501-8 .. i just started the motor for the first time 3 minutes ago .... and all i gotta say is HOLY crap .. its sounds amazing and the throttle response was crazy fast .. havent driven it .. just started it for a couple minutes ..
ill let yall know how it goes tommorow when i drive it ..
501 is a small cam, not much bigger than stock L98 cams, just has a good deal more lift. i'd expect that cam to peak at 5400ish rpms. I would go with the 502 over that.
but i got a 305 .. not a 350 .. and i wanted more low to mid range torque for that "kick you in the seat" feel .. without over camming it and ruining my gas mileage ..
just depends what you want out of a cam .. a daily driver .. or a mean drag racer ..
i called all of the cam company's and got there recomendations and did some more research and from there chose the best out of those
yes you can use that cam for a stock computer car with no tuning and it will run fine. that cam is no bigger than a stock L98 cam, but maybe abit more aggressive ramps. I like to call that a cheater cam, basically a more modern L98 cam
i think you could go one step up and still be fine yet make good power over that cam
I think either of those crane cams will work just fine on the stock computer. the 224 cam which is slightly larger will need a adjustable fuel pressure regulator to get the fueling more dialed in but even stock cars can benefit from tuning. You can adjust timing tables to get every bit of power out of it.
comps 08-501-8 is a good one too, but you will have to add shims/offset locks to handle that lift on stock heads.
oh and to add, Lb9 305's and camaro L98's had iron heads stock.
they should be iron....i'd check the casting number on the head to see whats goin on there. before you buy anything, check to see if you really have a 305 in there and see what heads you have
oh wow, good deal man those are pretty decent heads! Corvette 113's are popular and are a good base to build on
Now you must find out block casting numbers to verify if you have a 305 or a 350. check that pad that is in front of the passenger side cylinder head, above the timing chain. it will have two number codes on it. give me those numbers and i'll tell you what you have
i just got my 91 305 runnin with the 08-501-8 cam ..
it runs / idles fine .. but drives like crap .. what timing / fuel pressure do i need to start with ..
ive been messing with it .. but i noticed some liquid splattering out the exhuast pipe onto the ground .. im gussing its fuel .. but i dont know if its unburnt fuel or my rockers arent adjusted right and a cylinder isnt sealing right ..
neways .. what do you recommend for a good starting point on timing / fuel pressure .. i got an adjustable regulator .. but i gotta run and get a gauge

LT1 cam or pretty much any of the above mentioned cams will push a 305 5sp into the 14's. i know many that went high 14's stock

i think i am going to go with the lt1 cam or possibly the lt4(not hotcam) cam. i would like to run 1.6 rockers so can i just upgrade the springs to compensate or do i need to do headwork for the added lift? also this motor was out of a 305 tpi auto from 88. does it have the "big cam" or was that just the 5-speed cars? also i have the original 305 auto computer and chip but i am running a 5-speed can i just get a 305 5-speed chip and be ok or is there any kind of wires that need to run to the 5-speed for the computer? am pretty sure my 700r4 had a connector hooked up to it, idk if the 5-speed requires anything
88 could possibly have the L98 cam but more than likely it has the smaller cam. i think 90+ years all had the bigger cam.
depends on what LT1 cam you get, lifts are different for various years. with 1.6 rockers on LT1 cams, you'll be cutting it close on max lift for the heads. Lt4 cam i think is rated with 1.6 rockers but you'll have to look it up to be sure.
you proby can use the 305 5sp chip and be just fine. get a 88 5spd 305 chip.
lucky dog you! that is a corvette motor from 87-91. If its a MAF car then its a 87-89. surprised it has a 5 spd too. they generaly dont hold up well to 350's torque
depending on the year, hp is rated at 240-250 and torque 340-350lbft. In reality its more like 250-260 on motor cuz those will put down 220whp stock, some abit closer to 230. Thats healthy
Now you need to reconsider the cam... gotta step up a few steps. comp cams 502 is a nice choice now.
that block with that number should be a roller block. Just buy looking at the pics, it appears to have roller lifters.
teh comp 502 cam, 08-502-8 is 218/224 with .495/.503 lift. You will need new springs for it. Can reuse stock retainers more than likely if you stick with a stock style spring like the comp 981's. You will need 7degree +.050 locks and .060" of shims. 7 degree locks can be hard to find, so then you will need 10 degree retainers and the offset 10 degree locks and then ofcourse teh shims. This is to handle the lift of that cam.
Part numbers can be something like this: offset locks 10 degree CCA-614-16
retainers 10 degree comp cams cca-750-16
springs, comp cams cca-981-16
shims comp cams CCA-4753 just use the .060's
that will give you the spring pressure, and ability to handle that cam lift without machining the heads.
stock MAF computer will handle it, but you should look into a tune. Atleast get a fuel pressure regulator and also play with base timing. Try 10 degrees and 46psi fuel. Is a good starting point.

the intake ports may flow a few cfm more but its not much to see alot of gains from that, but every bit helps. The exhaust ports tho flow alot better than stock irons. they will help make alittle power thru better scavenging of the cylinder. Getting more out wll help get some in.
other gain is they are lightweight and have 58cc chambers to give you alot more compression. But since aluminum dissipates heat more rapidly, the extra compression is needed so the gains are offset
