Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

Its time to make a TPI base that will support a good 190cc or larger heads. A stock Edelbrock base has a Intake min. cross sectional area of 1.70 square inches ( 1.600 tall X 1.100 wide ) about the same size as stock L98 aluminum heads. I need about 2.4 or more CSA for my project, so lets start the project. The first thing to do is get a new base and thats done.

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

My heads are ported 215 cc Dart Pro 1s that have 1.200 wide X 2.100 tall ports, so this is the size i need to shoot for. The 1.200 wide will be easy and the only area that needs help is on each side by the fuel injector boss. Now getting from 1.600 to 2.100 tall is a lot harder. The fuel injector to the port floor is 1.850 so it's time to move the injector up .250 to get the 2.100 I need. A picture of the new injector mounting fittings.

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

I had to offset bore the stock injector boss out to fit the new injector fitting. This will move the injector up and outward need to keep the stock injector angle into the stock fuel rail when I move the fuel rails up .250. One good byproduct of this is now the injector location is more like a LSX type engine and points the spray more at the back of the intake valve.

A picture of the fittings ready to be pressed in and installed. Now time to fire up the welder and weld them in place and fill the roof area that needs to be moved.

Nice lathe work Jerry! Its times like this, me seeing another person fabbing up a hotrod part. Wished I could be a ghost in the corner just so I could get a whiff of the coolant, and aluminum as it was being worked into a piece of art.

The old 300 cfm base is 1.850 tall ports and the injectors in the stock location, this base is 2.150 tall ports and relocated injectors.

I have welded the roof and injector area and have the first couple mill steps setup. Sorry about the dark pictures the flash is dead on my camera.

wow, these are the bases that aftermarket companies SHOULD make. that is awesome! should flow something incredible

There is no problems with the injectors moved up .250 is there? i guess that aint to high but could make a difference with how fuel rails fit under the runners i guess

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

Orr89RocZ. Yes to answer your question. However Jerry is taking it one step further by raising the injectors with the bungs. There is room to raise the injectors somewhat before the fuel rail hits.

On my installation I had to have the fuel rails machined some in order to clear the runners. It may not show up that clear but Jerry is also reshaping the angle of the intake manifold entry into the head. He is performing two operations in one. Opening up the port to the proper cross sectional area and reshaping the entry angle.

I might add that Jerry has been an inspiration to us here locally.

With a Super ram you can go .250 with no problem. TPIS long tubes are also no problem. Now SLP runners make the plenum mount lower then stock and you will have problems with the front fuel crossover hitting the EGR passage on the bottom of the plenum.

I have a Super ram.

I'm all for that, this intake will have about 45 hrs in it when done.

I have the roof angle change down to 10 degrees from the factory 26

To show the change in the new intake roof look at the bar stock laying in the ports. The first one is in a stock port, the second is in a ported port and the blue silicone is a trick flow 195 casting. See how much better the new roof will line up to the heads roof. The new roof angle is over 1 inch into the intake, can you say high port TPI.

Looking real good. You have gone from a 1.6" tall port to a 2.15" tall port. That is .55" which is over a 1/2 inch from stock. Yes that is a tall port.

Thus making it not very cost effective for those of us unable to do the work ourselves. I'm glad you are doing this to show it can be done and will make great power just the same. I look forward to seeing the finished results.

Jerry is a stickler for details and will spend an hour on a project just to make sure a millimeter of area is 100% correct.

If you arent able to do this yourself, tell the guy porting your intake to concentrate on the area by the injectors. We have found that area to be the smallest cross-section. And then gasket match the ports.

Found this on the web. Are some castings different than others? I mean, I know that they are not exactly the same, but it says here the Hi-Flo measures 1.88" tall. Could someone please double check on this? Thanks

Stock Base runner ports = 39mm dia.(1195 sq mm) (1.470", 1.697 sq in ) *Measured
Stock Base intake ports = 29mm X 44mm (w X h) (1276 sq mm) (1.73"x1.15", 1.986 sq in ) *Measured

Edelbrock Base runner ports = 41mm dia.(1320 sq mm) (1.609", 2.033 sq in) *Measured
Edelbrock intake ports = 29mm X 48mm (w X h) (1392 sq mm) (1.883"x1.13", 2.138 sq in) *Measured

The problem with those numbers is that they were probably measured at the openings. You will find if you go say and inch or two into the openings(runners or base) that the numbers or cross sectional area is much less. Well under 2 square inches. More like 1.85 or even less in some cases such as the TPI Vortec manifold.

If they use a 1206 gasket, no I dont think so. I believe the biggest is a 1205 gasket unless you do some major welding and porting.

For around $525 you can get your base ported to flow well above 300cfm. Dr. J did an Accel version and it flowed 330cfm. That will support some serious horsepower.

What is the largest port size the base can be ported to without welding/raising the injectors? Do you have flow numbers on that? I never got around to porting the head side runner on my old superram base. I just opened u the runner tube hole size to large tube runners and took it in as far as i could reach.

I think this is a good time to once again say the Vortec TPI base is the worst flowing after market one out there. We have had a couple seriously worked on with a lot of welding and it is a chore to get 300 cfm out of them. I mean SERIOUSLY worked over. By the way Edelbrock makes all the Vortecs.

The First TPI intake manifold flows 300 cfm out of the box and it only goes up from there. I believe you could get an Accel TPI intake manifold to flow 300 cfm without welding. I'm not sure you can do it with the Edelbrock standard TPI. It would take someone with a flow bench and some judicial grinding.

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

Well im runnin an edelbrock base on my truck now but i have 2 SRs that im workin on both with accel bases. One of the bases has been ported some and i think it was done by a pro....you can see the score lines from where they marked out the gaskets. Not sure what size gaskets they ported to but i would like to port that one more since lots of the work is done already. Would 300cfm support a 224-230 .53*s lift 195afr headed 355 motor alright? this is what im workin on. pics of a 300+cfm non-welded base would be perfect if anyone has any!

AFR's only flow 280's cfm so 300 cfm on the manifold is a good starting point to not limit the heads.

"how do i would i know when im close to the 285-300? "

I would say you need the exit port to the head be at least 2.2 square inches taking the radius into account. This also means the rest of the port back up to the runner inlet needs to be opened up likewise preferably with a taper to at least a 1.75" opening at the runner. I assume you are using the Accel intake manifold.

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

MadMax, I'd be very interested in seeing the pics of your ported intake. I just got an Edelbrock base and runners and will match those to their gaskets. I'm working on rebuilding and porting my 416 heads (not looking to spend too much) with LS1 valves. I'm wondering what would be the best gaskets to match my intake to the heads. Any ideas?

If I find them, I will post them up for you. They seem to have gone missing at the moment, so I'm going to have to find my backup discs wherever those are packed away.

Re: Edelbrock TPI Base porting for good heads...

is anybody willing to tell how much it costs to get dr. J's to do the full spiel on the intake, runners, plenum and everything to get it into the 300 range? i know it would be subject to change and they say the dual plane intakes start around $525 but I couldn't find anything on TPI.

I haven't had him do anything with runners, but the base work runs $100 for welding and $525 for base porting.

The Accel that flows 330 is on a '91 Z28 w/auto trans.

It sports a set of out of the box Trick Flow 195's, a stock port matched Super Ram and a Comp 280 XFI.

It put down 351/386 to the rear wheels and ran 110 in the 1/4.
