Ok. I am planniing this engine build over the next few years (cause the entire drivetrain will need repalced), but i finally have the blueprints finished so i wanted to know what you guys would think.
First, what i'm doing right now. it's all the engine work i can do with my current $, and will have to last for awhile.
I call it stage 1:
3.42s
L98 block w/ all wiring, computer, etc. basically turn-key
30 over bore/hone (high milage. Honing is looking more like boring.)
Scat 9000 series Cast crank. 3.750 stroke
Forged 4340 5.7 I-beam connecting rods
forged flat tops. somewhere around 10-10.8:1 compression
home ported L98 heads
FIRST injection system less electronics.
home-made CAI intake.

Comps Cams roller rockers (1.5 or 1.6? anyone out there know?)
new gaskets, bolts, bearings, and liquids (grease) throughout. freshen up the old block basically.
SVO injectors
basic tune to get it running right
adjustable Fuel pressure regulator.
Stage 1.5 (if i have any money left after that up there)
Dyno Don's shorty headers
dual magnaflow cats
custom fab'd Y-pipe
Hooker 3in Catback
Then sometime in the future, after the tranny has been replaced with a TKO-500, and the rear-end swapped (9inch?), Stage 2:
Stage 2 includes:
AFR 195cc eliminators
new cam
professional porting of the FIRST system.
New electronics/wiring/ignition system
Full dyno tune
3.73 gear
and just for fun:
Stage 3:
Custom fabbed 4 in single cat-back
150 shot
I'm pretty sure with the right tune and match the cam up well, this setup should absolutly scream. Opinions? Particularly on my "stage 1", because I'm trying to make that go along way since it may be awhile before i have this kinda $ again.

note: I already have SFC's so please no "OMG u need SFCs first!!11!1!1". However, other than that, any constructive thoughts are much appreciated. This is my first engine, and at 17 yrs old, there is no way in he11 that i really know what i'm doing here. i just know my 305 isn't fast enough

new lifters for your l98-100
zz4 cam 120
z28 springs retainers and locks-50-80
300 and you have that kit
your paying for the retrofit cam and lifters when you dont need it with your block
I would go with something with a little less lift and a little more duration
but thats just me
OK thanks. That was one thing i wanted to look into, because i knew my block was a roller block. what cam would you suggest and what roller rockers?? also what valve springs? I want all that stuff to be nice and fresh.
I already have every part for the shortblock printed out and in a folder along with phone numbers and quotes from the engine shop, the prices listed and added up etc etc etc. There will be no issues with the short block . The issue will be seeing how far i can stretch the rest of my money before school starts and i have to start saving money (consider winter my "dry season" for money flow).
I'm one to dream big, yes, but I'm also one who will work my a$$ off to accomplish that dream, rather than the typical "oh how amazing would this be... then 2 years later they've completely given up only 10% through". It may take me awhile but i will finish this car. Obviously you havn't seen how much work i've already done and how determined i am to make it perfect in my eyes!

edit: and now that i think about it. I really am very surprised at how un-supportive that was? Don't be biased just because i am young. I'm already pretty accomplished compared to most teenagers, and I'd like to think some adults. I'm not sayiing this won't be particularly hard to pull off because i'm so young, but young doesn't always equal stupid, poor, dreaming children. There are actually people out there with some motivation in life, I'm proud to say.
I'm not sure if it means anything at all, but i kinda get it from my dad too. he had 34 cars by the time he was 19, including charger R/ts, Boss mustangs, Z/28s, etc etc etc. Although i think his GTO's and his 442 were his favorites. And it all started with a Pinto his dad gave him, and a summer of work. I think i'll be able to pull off 1 car and some mods... if it comes to it, i can always sell my 30 MPG Grand Am. Anything with a 3 in front of the MPG is getting big money these days.

Just my opinion here, but when you get done with "stage 1", even with a zz4 or the comp cam you have indicated I think you'll be mighty disappointed in the results.
Without some exhaust mods (the exhaust setups on our cars stock are _highly_ restrictive) and no heads/headwork to match that cam, it's going to be a letdown. (edit: I see now you indicated you're going to port the heads, good deal)
My advice: do your rebuild since it sounds like that is necessary...and put the money you were going to spend on the first intake system into some shorty headers, an exhaust system and maybe some mild head porting. I think you'll be a little happier with that setup out of the gate. Once you get that far, then look at doing the intake setup. In the meantime, while the motor is out of the car, you can certainly work on porting your intake plenum and base. I have over 300whp using a stock base and plenum, highly ported (but I do have SLP runners; you'll see more torque though using the stock tubes).
take it one step at a time and concentrate all your focus, because you obviously have some, on the task at hand

OK. After reading this, i think i'm going to put the exhaust work ahead of the intake and some of the valvetrain work. I'll still get a camshaft and maybe new lifters if it needs them, but everything other than that can be accessed from the top, so i'm not worried about putting them on RIGHT NOW.
stage 1 is really just about getting it so the engine never has to be opened up again, so it can stay in the car for the rest of its life (or until i hurt it ). Hense the bottom end work. I know there is more power to be seen from putting bottom end $ elsewhere (like heads), but Heads can be put on in the car, which saves alot of time and stress compared to trying to put a rotating assy on in the car (not possible i know. cheap attempt at humor).
anyways. I think i can get at least to the Y-pipe on what i have now if i cut out the first system. I may have to bug my dad for a quick loan for the cat-back, but i should be ok. Thanks for the advice!

SFCs are in the garage. Weld ons. I'll try and get the ignition system upgraded too, although again i'm stretching my money thin at that point. Still i'll try my hardest.
And of course i listen to anyone with more experience than me. The point of this thread was to get opinons from more experienced people on what i have managed to come up with on my own and with the help of my dad, although he hasn't built a car in 20 years cause of family so he's not up to date with the newest stuff.
