TPI or carbed?

Well I have been toying around with the idea this winter to yank out my 305 TPI engine and throw in a 383 but carbed...I don't know what I'd like to do. I know with carb I'm going to pay less for air+fuel delivery BUT I won't have that great of mpg. If I go with some sort of EFI top end then I could have decent mpg but paying for it...hmmmm **** man.

Re: TPI or carbed?

I guess it would depend on whether or not you can/want to deal all the computer stuff that goes into TPI ... or EFI in general. I have had my 89 formula 350 for a few years now and am just starting to work on it a little bit at a time. I did have the desire to turn it into a monster at the drag strip, but you can only do so much before you have to reprogram the computer and get new PROMs and that stuff. I would love to learn, but just read an entire how-to book on it and it left me with that ... huh?? ... type of feeling. Maybe a book is not the best way to learn and maybe I could find someone to take the time to teach me. But I sure was thinking ... man, carb is way easier.

Re: TPI or carbed?

Aftermarket fuel injection>carb>TPI

i hate tpi, too much money wasted for ok results IMO...go carbed for now then save up for a nice flowing aftermarket fuel injection setup later thats what im doin, i have no regrets about getting rid of my L98.....

Re: TPI or carbed?

for the strip, carb, for the street, tpi.

for the city or mixed driving, tpi

i don't get why people have such a hard time with tpi, it's a carb that you use a computer to tune, if you know carbs you know air and fuel, it's not like the engine runs on jello. fuel timing spark, sa'll folks.

the best thing i did to learn about tuning efi, was to read about tuning quadrajets, learned the basis of an engines needs, and applied those to efi, pumpshot=accel enrich, wot circuit= power enrichment, idle circuit= iac valve and base pw. just keep doing that and you'll be getting somewhere.
