Want new heads. Need opinions.

Heres the setup this far. Stock L98 shortblock, LT4 hotcam, 1 3/4 headers, TPIS big mouth, port matched SLP runners, Ported plenum, 52 mm TB. (mini-ram someday)

The heads must be..

-aluminum

-angle plug

-No larger than 64cc chambers

-190-200cc intake runner

-Pre-Vortec design.

- acccept centerbolt valve covers.

- use 1204 or 1205 intake gasket (So I can use my intake)

- Considerably out perform my 113's out of the box

- $1300/pair or less.

Any suggestions?

These will be close to what you want. The Brodix IK180, but they are only 180 cc ports. Thats ok though they are a terrific head.

Flow Numbers

Lift----Intake---Exhaust
.200----138----112
.300----188----149
.400----234----167
.500----243----175
.600----245----178

Thats compared to the stock Aluminum L98 heads

Lift----Intake---Exhaust
.200----120----96
.300----160----123
.400----186----140
.500----196----155

I was actually looking into the IK200. I just checked the Brodix website, they dont come in angle plug. Im worried about clearace issues with the TPIS Headers.

I like what patriot has to offer (and the price) But Ive heard guys are having a hard time getting a good intake seal with them, because the Patriots are to be used with the 1206 gasket, and you cant open a tpi base that big. Im planning to call patriot tommorow to find out whats up.

As for my 113's, im hanging on to them. I forsee another Thirdgen in my future. If I do decide to sell them, i'll let you know.

WOW! Why would you spend $1300, and still not have what you really want? If you are going to spend that much money, and don't wanna go a couple hundred more to get your money's worth, keep the money in your pocket. That's helpful advice

I wish they were, thats the only reason I havent picked a set up yet. Maybe I'll call TPIS tomorrow as well. I think I already know what they are going to say though.

$1500 AFR's? Maybe I was mistaken. All of the ones ive seen are $2000 or more. Its not "what I really want" either. No one can argue that AFR does not make a proven, time after time, quality product. Its not what Im looking for. $1300 is my limit, not my minimum. If I can find something that fits my fancy for 1000, thats 300 to go elsewhere on the car.

i wont argue that for a cpl hundred bucks more u can pick up a few more cfm of air, but then whats to stop u there, for more money he could get some better flowing afrs and so on and so on...its got to stop somewhere and his stoping point was $1300 and afrs do not fall in that catagory..

are AFRs good heads? NO! they are great heads "But with great power comes great responsibil....er cost.." lol

Re: Want new heads. Need opinions.

Spend $300 on porting equipment, work over your 113's, and spend $1000 elsewhere on the car...that way you won't have power, or responsibilty, or great cost, or the ability to recognize good advice when you hear it.
But then again, go ahead and blow the $1300, it's your coin bro. I bought a pair one year ago, direct from AFR, milled to 62cc chambers, for less than $1500.
Bill
P.S.: how much you gonna drop on the mini ram intake?

With something as mild as the Hotcam, a really nice ported set of 113 heads would probably do the trick. TPIS is the only company that I have ever seen do a great job with them and have proven power results. Unfortunately, between the cost of the work and the value of the core charge they are not worth what they want for them. I could definately get a set of AFR's for that. I would do it myself, but i have neither the experience or the skills to do a job on par with TPIS. I'll contact AFR tomorrow and see if they can fix me up with something thats close to my budget. I have an open mind on the subject, thats why im asking for opinions. Im glad that AFR's have worked for you, and AFR must be proud to have such a great spokesperson.

Unfortunately like many people, Im looking for a budget head that will give good results. Maybe not the best results money can buy, but enough for what I want to spend. Otherwise, I would have one stop shopped with AFR. There are many other aftermarket head companies out there that do make good products. Like most things, you "get what you pay for". Im looking to get $1300 worth of aftermarket cylinder heads.

As for the Miniram....When one comes up used that I can afford, I'll buy it. A Miniram is not in the budget as of now.

Ps. Ditch the LTR in favor of a Miniram. Since money is no object, I dont know why you skimped out on the intake. Your not even getting the most out of those wonderful AFRs.

AH HA! I have found AFR "street" heads for $1500. Its still more than Id like to spend. Hell, $1300 is more than id like to spend....

Off of the AFR subject for now.

Whats everyone else running, meet my criteria or not, and how do you like them? (other than AFR)

Naw, HSR will be installed, as soon as I complete the porting; I hate having great parts sitting on the shelf waiting for me to give them TLC.

Did AFR's jump in price or something? I bought my Eliminators AFR's for less then $1300 year and a half ago.

Re: Want new heads. Need opinions.

The Brodix IK 180 doesn't come in an angle plug, but the Brodix RR 180 does.

I'm also in the market for some new heads, I'm leaning towards the new Dart Pro 1 Platinum's. They are a new design much like the new AFR's and can be found for 1,100.

Re: Want new heads. Need opinions.

I have a set of TPIS headers (bought in 2004 for a 1985 C4) and I had adequate room for the sparkplugs with the original heads ( 624 ) and also with a set of World Products SR heads that were both straight plug designs. Now I have bought a set of AFR 210's that are an angled design and there is a lot more room for the plugs. You could consider a set of Canfield's heads. The flow numbers are good, the workmanship of the head is also good and the price is less than the AFR's. A friend is assembling his 383 in my garage and his Canfield 215's look pretty good. He used the AFR's (which are rough cut CNC'd) to get an idea of how to pocket port the Canfields. When the valves are out you can feel a small ridge just above the valve seat that should be removed along with a few small lumps in the rest of the port. There are two small fins on either side of the valve guide on the AFR's that the Canfields don't have so I am sure the AFR's will still outflow the Canfields but not three or four hundred dollars worth. Even without porting the Canfields it probably is not worth the price difference. Or you could even look at Jegs heads (which I think are Canfields, maybe someone can correct me). If you can stay on all your budget numbers, well I envy your superior willpower.
