I've got a friend who has an 86 IROC 305 TPI, and he wants to throw a cam in there. Its going to have headers and an intake on it. Any ideas on a good cam and supporting hardware.
And yes I have told him to go with a 350, but he says he wants to keep it original. I said to him that the 305 sux, and by putting h/c/i its not original anymore. But, its not my car.
On some of them I think you have to grind off a dowell pin on the front but other than that they work fine.I`m running the LT4 production cam in my 350.
377 rear end ,350 4 speed turbo tranny ,low end rocker crane cam ,intake and headers and trust me he will burn any 350 off the line every times only thing is its only go 4 take of or an 8th of a mile. anything further than that and that 305 wont have enough pwer to pull it like it does now.i could pull 135 mph out of my 305 stock but got left off the line every time,i always caught what ever i raced but light to light i never won, after changing out the cam and headers my front end would lift everytime and nothing could touch me light to light but the down fall was my top end was only 115mph maxx and id get caught every time but it depends on what else he might wonna change he could pull more but 305's only pull 150 horse power any way so let him no and make sure he knows it wont pass smog any more after changing any of it
In 86 they still had the non roller block, so I doubt that an lt1 cam would work without modifications. I suggest calling comp cams and asking them for a good cam for that engine. I have found them to be very helpful when I upgraded the cam in my 305 and have been very pleased with the results.
It may be a good idea to get new valve springs with the new cam. Also the engine will not perform to its full potential after the cam upgrade unless the car is tuned properly. There is nothing like a good wide band tune.
1103 cam = 214/224 .442/.465 at 1.5 rocker and 112 LSA
Not a bad choice.
I've had a 204/214 .420/.443 110LSA (generic grind, almost everyone makes one like this) and 212/212 .444/.444 112LSA (Comp grind) and both I and the car liked the second one better but I should have gone with the split pattern 212/218 Comp grind instead I think. The two I listed ran about identical at the track.
if its a roller motor, the cam I have in my sig. is GREAT!
If hes on a budget, he can find a used LT1 cam on Ebay for cheap.
I paid $230.00 for mine.
Then I bought new springs.....and don't forget to change the valve seals while your in there!

If I was building a flat-tappet TPI engine, I would go with the Lunati 60101LK.
Sorry Explicit, but I’m gonna hijack your thread for a min. I have an 87 IROC TPI w/auto trans. I saw somewhere on this forum that these cars had different stock cams based on auto (190 hp) and manual (215 hp). What’s the difference? I have also been told that due to the fact that my car is registered in Ca. that if I upgrade the cam it won’t pass smog anymore. My 305 runs pretty well for having 150k miles on it, so it’s not quite ready for the 350 yet. I’ll get the 350 when the 305 gives up the ghost, but until then I was thinking of getting a cheap cam. Maybe even one out of a 305 manual, if it will pass smog that is.
I think the manual car got the L98(350) cam. Some simply call it the good guy cam.I`m know of several CA guys running aftermarket cams and passing smog.

There are PLENTY of cams out there that will pass emissions with ease. The cam that I have in my TPI'd Vortec 350 in my van allows it to run with nearly ZERO's on all the test. Everything is a FRACTION of the legal limits for the 83 G-van it is in. I have cats and a fully functioning emissions setup, minus the EGR which I deleted rather than plumbed externally. Our emissions testing is done, loaded on a dyno. I have tuned the chip myself to match the engine.
I think the manual car got the L98(359) cam. Some simply call it the good guy cam.I`m know of several CA guys running aftermarket cams and passing smog.
In 1990 ALL 305s got the L98 cam..From 1987-1989 the Manual transmission cars got the L98 cam. Autos recieved the peanut cam.
i have been told and as a result thereof i bought a ZZ4 cam, with about 1,000 miles on it and ZZ4 springs, retainers, push rods. about 150.00 total.
people buy ZZ4 crate engines and just take the cam and stuff out right away and put in a hotter cam.
the ZZ4 is ok for the street. im waiting for some 601 heads with 53 cc's so the compression will get up to 10 to 1. its a cheap build.
If your not looking to go to drastic the sum-g5000 (crane cam) is nice, I put one in my 305 and even with bad blow by and a 2.73 rear it ran damn good. its 420/442 204/214. With 1.6's it changes the lift to 448/472. I bought it and installed it in december (have reciept for cam) put less than 5,000 miles on it and now I'm pulling the 305. If your interested I'll sell you the cam/lifers for $100. Both are pretty much brand new.
just out of curiosity how much of a gain would you get out of an lt1 cam with tune of course? ive been considering this myself but want to know if its better to just get one off summit. just remembered though, i do have the L98 cam, since my car is an 89 with the manual transmission...
