tpi will not start unless press gas pedal

I installed a 1986 Pontiac tpi 305 in a 1936 chevy but it will not start when cold without pressiing gas pedal. When driving it always pings no matter what type of gas used timing has been checked and is correct changed wiring harness and still same problem ready to change to carb or go to ford any ideas

Re: tpi will not start unless press gas pedal

Hi Hambone
The only time you need to press the gas floor during starting is when the engine is flooded. I am assuming you are talking about pulling the pedal to the floor - Right? The pinging is not right, make sure you have the knock sensor installed and it is working. The wire once came off on my 87 Z-28 and it sounded like a bucket of bolts. The knock sensor should take care of knocking. The knock sensor is the passenger side of the engine. What does the engine idle at once it is started?
thanks
Bill

I only have to press the pedal down a little bit and motor starts right up I have checked the knock sensor and it is new and everything is hookup right. I also have a problem with my digital dash showing reading on the speedometer when I rev up the motor

Did you reset and adjust the TPS and IAC? Perhaps the throttle is not open enough to let enough air in when cold?

And with it pinging all the time like that, your timing MUST be off or something similar is wrong. What kind of balancer did you use? There are two different kinds with zero marks both straight up and at the 2 o'clock position.

Re: tpi will not start unless press gas pedal

Hi
I agree with Kevin - please remember that you have to disconnect a wire in the harness to set the timing – it will set a Fail code, disconnect your battery after you have the timing correctly setup.
Thanks
Bill
