GMHTP - Inches and Pounds L98 turbo article...

Guys, this was an extremely interesting article and proves that there's life in the L98 yet...

...but... (there's always a but!)

I'm struggling to understand how a BONE STOCK L98 with nothing more than a cam, long tube headers, electric water pump and FAST XFI can put out 331hp - that's almost 50% more than the stock output!

Also, getting 481hp at only 7psi doesn't seem to add up - getting that kind of figure out of a stock LSX engine would be pretty good!

Help! If this can be done, then I'm sold!

For info, I have an '88 GTA with an '86 Corvette L98 (aluminum heads), adjustable FPR (running at around 50psi), uprated ignition system (wires and coil), throttle body flow straightener and a set of ceramic coated Heddman shorty headers - soon to have an aftermarket chip fitted too...

Given the test setup, probably not unrealistic. Have to look at the whole picture they are painting first.

Here's a picture of the "test" engine

There's not even a fan belt on there. So 331 at THE CRANK, well I suppose thats entirely possible.

Sure it's possible! It's not running any accessories at all so there is no drag like there would be installed in a car. Well it's possible if it's crank HP not RWHP.

Decent bumpstick for that car, not all that great for boost tho. 218/224 on a 110 lsa. Good grind for TPI based motors. 331 crank with no accessories is pretty good with those mods and stock TPI. Probly see 300-320 with just an intake manifold swap and exhaust tho. Miniram/stealth ram swap on that motor will make as much power as the cam swap. Add that cam and your over 360hp on motor easily. ZZ4 is just a carbed L98 with slightly better cam and its 345-350 hp all day

Re: GMHTP - Inches and Pounds L98 turbo article...

hmmm reading the article and what i have been though with my car.....

makes me more determined to do my LQ4 swap

i mean i didnt see the money figures for the boosted setup...but my question to those thinking of boosting their cars. whats the cost or building the drivetrain to hold that power? Whats the cost or rebuilding the motor after it blows up? i mean the test is all good and dandy....but most l98's are what...20-22 years old already?

ill take 345-360 hp out of the box LQ4 power

this is all just my .02 and someone will get angry and message me about how im bad mouthing the 3rd gens......well hey this is opioion im sorry

arn't u the guy who can't get his tpi running right so ur giving up and swapping in something else instead of figuring it out? That's no reason to put down other tpi stuff.. As far as rebuilding the drivetrain to hold the power... you're gonna have to do the same thing with a lsx swap.. not sure what your point was there..

i figured it out.....it was 80's design failure

seriously.....i pulled the tpi off for a weekend and oh my god even with crap L98 heads the 327 was a beast again running a carb lol. The short stroke and crap intake must of hindered the motor that badly

i mean this is the costs i was looking to get me decent hp/tq numbers:
--heads(800-1500...depending if i bought aluminum or not)
--intake(500-1000...depends again on what i went with)
--trans(1500 to rebuilt 700r4 or 950 for a th350)

sooooo

min money = 2250
max = 4000

compare to:
Used lQ4 (600-800)
stock ls2 manifolds(100)
carb intake setup(700)
t56 swap (1500)
min =2900
max = 3100

im just saying we all know the ls series motor is superior in EVERY WAY!

why do you think its the most popular motor swap with every car made almost? Why is it found in a large amount of gm made vehicles?

yes it costs more to get to the running point to do a ls series swap.....but power levels jump before mods

mod'ed l98 = 350-400 hp(stock lower end and no power adder)
mod'ed lQ4 = easily past 400hp(same here)

Re: GMHTP - Inches and Pounds L98 turbo article...

I think each case is different. If I had the onhand option to purchase and LSx, I would, but I don't. I do have the option to purchase a turbo, so I did. No one around here is selling an LQ4 for 600-800 much less those parts... I was able to slowly and patiently gather my turbo settup for less than $1500.

Honestly, I think its about personal preference. I like the look of the TPI. I hate the look of the LSx motors. But I like the performance of the LSx motors, but hate the performance of the TPI's... TPI is what I have now and I'm just working with it... maybe later on when I race neon green eclipses for pinks, I'll have enough $$ for an LS9 Swap
