buying new car engine pics, need opinions.

Hey guys i have a decent sense of thirdgens and i was trying to find the RPO codes on the car with little luck. so here i have some pics of the car im looking at 1988 camaro IROC-Z 350 TPI 5 speed. was wondering if you see anything that set off any huge alarm bells it was juts recently mvi'd in my province for 2 years so it should be kinda ok. but yeah just basic engine pics i think it just needs a good clean up but other then that for the price i think its a good deal.

Has the engine been swapped, b/c if it has a 5-speed, then its a 305. 350's didn't come with 5-speeds. The RPO sticker is in the glove compartment.

Re: buying new car engine pics, need opinions.

find out what the 8th digit of the vin is. If its a 8, its a 350 car that somebody swapped to a manula trans, if its an f, its a 305.

i see a half gutted ac setup, some crazy wires by the lower radiator support and battery.

check out the rust under the shock-tower by the driverside washer fluid tank, i see something starting there.

Whats the asking price, and how is the rest of the body?

MOST IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!

look the car over, inside and out for rust. Check the floorboards, front and back on both sides, the lower radiator support, doorjams, around the windsheild, and inside the rear wheel wells on the "frame". Dont be afraid to get on your knees and look under the car really well. and if you find any rust, you can use it as a bargaining chip for a cheaper price. I wont even make an offer on a 3rd gen that has ANY rott at all anywhere, if you find some, there is most likely some more hidding in other places.

its common for these cars to have severe rust issues. In my search for another 3rd gen i recently looked at almost a dozen cars before i found one without any rott issues. I looked at a88 formy in particular. Great looking car from 5 feet, get closer and you start to see rust bubbling around all 4 wheel wells, and some on the floor. I checked the left rear wheel well and there was a hole i could fit my head through in the well, you could see the carpet and the back of the interior plastics. Im sure if i was able to pull the carpet out the floor would be rotted from the hump behind the rear seat to the driverseat.

I guess what im trying to say is LOOK FOR RUST and ROTT!

Re: buying new car engine pics, need opinions.

yeah i checked the car all over and its pretty good it passed inspection so the rust has to actually be in decent shape. in my region its hard to find good F-bodies and this seems pretty reasonable from that area. yeah the AC is kinda messed up which i knew before i even looked at the car. And with regards to the 305/350 thats what i thought too i wrote down the VIN but can't find it anywheres. so ill have to get it again. but yes i checked the wheel wells and all that and it all turned out good. ive been looking around at a lot of these in the area and this seems to be decent. As for price he wants 4500. but thats cdn and its also reflective of the area where 3rd gen fbodies are not as common or as in abundance as say in the states.

It doesn't appear to have the oil cooler lines.. hard to tell from the pics. But if it's a 350 it should.

ok yeah im going to get another look at it soon and check up on RPO codes, and the VIN number thing to figure out whether its a 305 or 350, i still like it even if its the 305, but i might lowball him because of it.

update yeah its a 305 or so the VIN id's not a huge deal to me, as the 305 that it is, is pretty good so i think i might still get it.
