Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

no o, let em explain this again. the EGR temp sensor (switch) is discontinued (no longer available ANYWHERE)
the EGR solenoid is discontinued (also not available)
if your problem is the EGR temperature sensor you can BYPASS it. the EGR temp sensor is a Thermal switch, when your EGR valve opens the gases passing through will heat the switch (temp sensor) and it will close and produce ground, telling your ECM the EGR valve is open. what you can do to bypass this that in THEORY should work for around thesame price as the old temp sensor is use a Vacuum operated switch run off of a T put in the vacuum line for the EGR valve. when the EGRY valve is opened vacuum is ALSO applied to the switch you put in and wired one end to the EGR temp sensor wire, and the other to ground, giving the ECM the ground signal it wants when the EGR is commanded to open. (use a vacuum delay valve before the switch to simulate the warming of the EGR temp sensor)

now the EGR solenoid opens and closes allowing the EGR valve to recieve vacuum, also discontinued

As for the solenoid, if this is your problem the all you need is the EGR solenoid from any cadillac equipped with the 4.9liter V8, it WILL work (tested) and a little bit of vacuum hose to route the vacuum lines to the front and back of the solenoid, its a direct plug in.

earlier in this thread i posted the correct way to trouble shoot your EGR code PROPERLY to make sure the solenoid is not your problem and the EGR temp sensor WHICH IS REALY A SWITCH, is not, and Visa versa. i will post a diagram later tonight for you guys who need it,

Thanks for testing that out. I am motived again to do some testing.

For those of you confused.

If you need the EGR solenid: use a 95 cadillac Deville with a 4.9 engine solenoid.
If you need an EGR temp sensor: Still no direct part replacement yet. Chevy 8588 is come up with an alt theory that is in the test process.

ok here is a diagram of how this bypass swicth will work, BY THE WAY, it dawned on me that this may be a good way to bypass EGR all together WITHOUT having a new prom burnt to "turn it off" unfortuneatly i have an issue with testing this out on my motor.... its not in the car lol, but if there is anyone willing to test this out it would be awesome to see my idea come to life :P

Another vacuum operated electrical switch https://www.phatperformanceparts.com...DSVOESSWITCHES

for those of you who are more technical out there and even those who are not i also included a diagram of how my bypass system stacks up next to the temp sensor, remember the temp sensor is NOT a sensor, its a switch!

What HG rated switch do you think we should try and use? Also, on your Deville there is no EGR temp sensor (aka switch). How does the Deville's egr system commicate with the ECM?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I would go with the 4Hg switch, also on speed density systems (includeing the later speed density camaro TPI) the ECM uses readings from MAP sensor which will read a change in pressure win the manifold when the EGR is flowing to read the operation of the EGR system. My cadillac is Speed density

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Look out my wheels are turning.

What about using a switch like this autometer one. It closes at temperatures 200 deg. F and higher. Opens at temps below 200 deg. F. Seems like it might work since that is about correct operating temps for EGR function. It's alot cheaper. Less then $20. Anyone know what thread type is on the current EGR temp sensors?

THE NEXT MORN IT STARTED RIGHT UP SMOOTH IDLE NO SES LIGHT, ABOUT 1000 RPM FOR A MIN OR SO THEN DOWN TO 650. SEEMS TO BE FINE. TRIED PLUGGING THE SWITCH IN BACK TO THE S.O.S TURNED IT OFF UNPLUGGED THE SENSOR, STARTED BACK UP IT WAS FINE. BEEN DRIVING IT EVERY DAY. THAT WAS 2 WEEKS AGO.

i think it is 1/8 NPT, MAYBE 1/4, you can take it to home depot and measure it.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Hey Chevy8588, I got my IROC-Z to turn on now. But,,,,, it doesnt wanna work right. Turns on, timing at top dead center with the EST disconnected. Reconnect the EST and . It doesnt want to turn on unless I turn the dizzy. Once on, EST reconnected, TDC, I drive off and at 5 mph, hesitation and no power even if I floor it. Any ideas?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

you need to disconnect the EST and set your timing to 6 degrees before top dead center, 0 degrees,(which is what i assume is what you mean by your timing is set @ TDC) will only get you started, but you'll have no power whatsoever.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Chevy8588- I figured out the issue with why I dont have any power when I push on the pedal, aside from the trouble codes that I pulled. My 86 IROC Z is TPI,,, So with that said, it is computer controlled right? Well the cam that I bought from SUmmit Racing is this one here
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-14097395.

If you read towards the bottom on the specs, it states non computer controlled. So my ECM wasnt adjusting the air/fuel ratio correctly which was the cause of no reving or acceleration other than what the injectors spray during idle. Just before I ordered, I had asked the sales rep if it was all good because we all know that sometimes there are typos in the internet. The rep said yes. So I went on an bought it, installed it, turned the key and it fired it up. then you can imagine the rest. I called Summit and explained what had happened and they told me that the Rep who helped me was new and that he just got out of automotive school. So now I have to pull the cam out while the block is in the Camaro. THIS REALLY BOILS MY BLOOD. So I filed a complaint towards the Rep. Can the cam be pulled out without pulling the heads? I ask because the roller liftrs are resting on the cam right?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

in order to pull the cam you gotta remove both the radiator and condenser, remove the rocker covers, remove the intake plenum, runners, and manifold, loosen your rockers, remove the push rods, and lifters. remove the water pump, drop the oil pain in the front, remove the crank pulley and harmonic balancer, remove the timing cover, remove the cam retainer, then FINALLY the cam. shrt answer? no the heads stay on, long answer? EVERYTHING ELSE comes off. not for the faint of heart, and a ROYAL pain if the motor is in the car... maybe get a tune for the cam? also for those specs you may as well have bought an LT1 cam, cheaper, about the same lift, and computer friendly :P

LT1 Cam? Do you have any suggestions? Is it ok to drop in a 4th Gen cam into a 3rd Gen engine. Wait what am I saying. Here is the engine code for my block. I have the 4 bolt mains, Roller one piece rear main seal...... 14093638 1987-95 350 2/4 Roller or flat tappet cam one-piece rear seal

With this info that I provided about my Block, It may be a LT1 right?

Chevy86 IROC-Z,

Have you looked at maybe having the solenoid rebuilt? I heard that there are places that can do this.

I had to replace mine last year and luckily I was able to purchase it from the dealer before they were discontiued.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Well this sucks. And in a way is pretty stupid. All the tree huggers harp on us about meeting emissions and now we can't get two parts for the heart of the emissions system. If I was paranoid I would think this is a conspiracy to make our cars not meet emissions so we have to get rid of them. I just did a bunch of searches and couldn't fins anything either. Now what?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Since the ECM sets code 32 if the switch is grounded when the car is started and the engine is cold, any thoughts on what would happen if you hooked the wires to another temp sensor on the engine so it wouldn't close the circuit until the engine was warm?

For what it's worth, TPIS suggested I mount the EGR Temp Sensor in a bung on the header if I were to install their Miniram intake with its EGR kit which does not have provisions for the temp sensor in the mounting bracket.

The link you sent is for a Time delay switch has nothing to do with the temp sensor or soleniod. Rock auto no longer has the parts. They are discontinued and not being manufactured. I have already checked with them.

Actually the temp sensor acts as the delay time that a engine takes to warm up. So yeah its wrong, but would works as compared to a engine warming up.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I emailed BWD's parent company and this was the response I got:

"Actually we did make both items at one time. The part numbers were VS19 for the solenoid and either ETS1 or 2 for the temp switch. As sales dropped, we reboxed GM's parts and then they discontinued them also. You might be able to find some old stock around, but we no longer have inventory. As a fellow Camaro owner(82 Indy Pace car) I feel your pain finding parts. Good hunting."

I was impressed it took less than 24 hours for a response. Makes sense that would just rebox and sell as aftermarket. Maybe if demand is there suppliers will make the parts. If not we will have to go to ported vacuum controlled EGR's like the 70's and tune the EGR function out of the chip. Stupid Emissions, I wish they would quite testing OBD I cars, it is more of a waste to even suport the equipment to do OBD I tests as there are less and less OBD I cars on the road.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I have callwd stores, emailed, checked all kinds or online sources and there is nothing. My question is, where did the old stock go? How could every single last part be gone?

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I didnt follow the post completely, but if anybody needs one of those EGR temp sensors, I have a brand new GM unused one from an 89 TPI if anybody is still interested. No box though. Bought it to restore the car then ditched the whole TPI setup. Shoot me a PM or email Mkos1980@aol.com if interested.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

With the GM number, nobody is showing stock anywhere in the country. However, off the AC-Delco number I have 4 listed. 3 are at Peterson GMC out in Louisville. You can reach them at (502) 459-1200. The other one is at LABEAU BROS in Kankakee, IL - (815) 933-5519. Stock is showing as less than 30 days old so hurry and call them.

Hope it helps.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I called both dealers which are GM truck dealers only and they could not pull up the AC/Delco number of 212-337. They can pull up the GM number 14087416 which states no inventory.

I don't know how compnine was able to find that info but when you call the dealers they cannot find the parts.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

Interesting. They're part of an inventory sharing program and have those parts listed. It should automatically remove them once they're out of inventory so it would seem at some level they either have, or think they have, the parts. Sorry it wasn't of much use.

Is there a name of the system I can tell them to look in? For example "look in the GM part finder plus" it shows in there. The parts people only seemed to want the GM number which we know is not showing any. Both of them said they could not pull up the Delco #.

Compnine I think you have business if I am not mistaken. If you know how to speak GM part to these people and can get the parts out of there inventory I will order it from you.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

I do, just add .com to my name.

Unfortunately it looks like it was a mirage. I called LABEAU and explained how I came across their inventory. They weren't sure why it still showed stock and were working to remove it. They gave me the only supplier they show as having stock and that company was also trying to have their inventory removed for that part.

Real tough piece to locate but I'll keep an eye out for it.

Ok, if you run into something let us know. Also for those of you that do not know Compnine has a nice parts finder site. He also posts a lot of very good diagrams on his site. Check it out at:

That's a free plug for you Jason for doing a little footwork for us.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

If it were my car, I'd spend the $150 to have my chip reburned and tune the stupid EGR out and turn off the AIR crap too. Since it's not my car and I feel your pain, try here:

http://www.oehq.com/index.cfm?showpa...artsearch2.cfm

Granted, it says discontinued and to call, but these folks have always been helpful to me. I would speculate that any salvage yard with any 3rd gen would have the piece you need sitting in one of the V8s. I can't tell you how many times I've had to toss the EGR pieces on the ground because they were in the way of something else I wanted on the car.

Good luck folks.

EDIT: the more I think about it, the more it pisses me off how the states and smog police demand you have the emissions stuff and then the manufacturers stop making it. At one point, I thought it prudent to use the cats and the EGR and maybe the AIR pump (I run all but the AIR), but if we can't even BUY the stuff, I don't think anyone should lose sleep for removing the emissions garbage.

Re: EGR temp sensor has been discontinued

only reason i see to keep EGR s because EGR adds a few mpg's, and in this day and age where fuel prices are EXTREMELY un reliable, I find it important to keep anything that that can HELP us not break the bank by driving our cars
