I ran into problems with my EGR solenoid (kept stalling on me while driving) so I ordered a new one and disconnected power to the solenoid.
I drove my car (with no issues) untl the new solenoid arrived today ...
The new solenoid takes a new connector (which I had one laying around the garage) that I put on... however, when all is hooked up the car surges and the RPM bounces at idle...
Using a test light I checked that there is a complete circuit with the connector at idle... in other words, at idle the test light is on when connected to the electrical connector
I was curious if there was suppose to be a constant current to the connector or if it was suppose to send pulses of current to the solenoid... Either way the circuit is being complete at idle...
Keep in mind... the old connector and solenoid worked, but stalled once and a while... the new connector/solenoid make the car un-drive able... which leads me to believe it's the electrical connector...

Curious everyone’s thoughts on this,
Thanks
maybe the leads are reversed. i had a the problem when i disconnected the egr solenoid. my rpm wouldnt come down. so a burn out result in a scary situation. good luck. vacuum test everything
Re: EGR Solenoid Power at Idle/Surging & Rough Idle
the solenoid you bought is for a TBI engine, thats why its different, but if you got the connector to work then it should be fine. the plug should have NO power in park or neutral at all, if you jumper the ALDL pins A&b like you do when you check for codes then the plug will have power. otherwise no power unless in a gear and under certain conditions.

Re: EGR Solenoid Power at Idle/Surging & Rough Idle
How did you make out with this delima?
I am trouble shooting my EGR & Solenoid on a 87 TPI & the one thing that throws me off is that the TB port that the solenoid plugs into appears to be a ported vacuum source. So, weather the solenoid is on, off, leaking or defective it would appear it couldn't effect the idle? So would this make it impossible for the solenoid or EGR valve to function at idle?
