How do i adjust the timing when...

The timing gauge or mark whatever it's called is missing from my car. I put a new distributor in because the pick up blew apart on the old one. I set the new dist. about where the original one was and tweeked it one way or the other little by little until it ran the best, but now the car is throwing a code 15 which i don't think has anything to do with the timing,(it's for the coolant temp sens.).
also the car starts up and idles ok but as soon as i give it any gas it stalls.
any help is appreciated. thanks.

You should be able to buy a new timing tang at auto zone or pepboys, look in the engine dress-up section, it bolts in place using the timing cover bolts.
