'86 305 dies going into gear/at stoplights?

I've got an '86 IROC-Z 305 that's been givin me some trouble lately. It dies when put in gear (reverse, drive). Almost all the time the RPM's will drop immediately and it'll wanna die. Sometimes it'll pick it back up, but it's been dying pretty consistently of late. Same thing happens when it sits in drive at a stoplight too long. I have to give it gas to keep it from dying. When it idles smoothly, its at about 1500, but it fluctuates a lot. I'm starting to think its a fuel problem? maybe? I've read it could be the distributor. How to check?

I'm pretty confused so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Re: '86 305 dies going into gear/at stoplights?

i had the same problem on my 88 iroc. my problem was an vacum leak. check for unpluged vaccum hoses first. if u dont find anything wrong, get throttle body cleaner and spray on the hoses and around intake manifold. im not the best person to help u, but that was the method i used to find my problem
