installing a new cam in my tpi and need some advice
hi i have a 1988 iroc with a hyd roller 96-2000 vortec engine its a tpi set up with a tpis big mouth intake along with slp runner and a matching ported plenuem to go with it (52mm throttle body) I recently bought a gm cam that was used on their ram jet 350 would this be a good match with what i got? also the heads are oem that came with the iroc (cast iron) with steel roller tip rockers 1.5 - 3/8 exhuast system is a 3 inch with super com hooker headers. Cam Specs: Description- Hydraulic Roller Design Advertised Duration- 288(Int) / 308(Exh) Duration @ .050"- 196(Int) / 206(Exh) Max Valve Lift W/ 1.5 Ratio Rocker- .431(Int) / .451(Exh) Lobe Centerline- 109
Re: installing a new cam in my tpi and need some advise
If thoes specs are correct that cam is pretty lazy and i think you could do a good bit better. The lift duration at .050 dosnt look too bad especially since your running a TPI with factory heads but its the ramp rate the i think is pretty terrible. The ramp rate is basically how quickly the valves open and faster is better for more area under the curve. Typically you see something like a 50 degree difference between the advertised and at .050 duration where as that cam is roughly 100 degrees lol. This means it has a very slow ramp rate to the point that dosnt even look right. Just my take on it though.

Call any Cam Company and the tech people will gather your specifics and help you to get a cam that will work where and how you want it to work. Good luck.
Re: installing a new cam in my tpi and need some advise
Welcome to the board.
The cam is pretty small for the engine.
However, since you are using the stock heads, you are limited by the spring lift of the original head. I belive the springs on the stock heads are good for a .480 max lift.
Even a used stock LT1 cam would be better choice (cost about $20)....until you upgrade the heads.
LT1 cam - 201/208 447/459 116
You could use a aftermarket cam and modify the heads with bigger springs and screw in studs.

With no torque loss anywhere !!! " to me thats pretty good since gas milage is my goal. well just want to know what yall heard about this cam (cam number gm14097395) thanks

35 hp increase with those cam specs is unrealistic
LT1 cam swap over stock might give you 15-20 hp. No more.
