I am wondering if I have my knock sensor in the correct place. I have it in the hole in the block infront of the starter. I was having clearance issues due to the hugger headers I put on. I decided to put a 45 degree galv. pipe fitting out of the block then screw in the knock sensor. I was over at my local napa and asked if this would be okay and if it will still work correctly...the man told me "What you have the knock sensor in the coolant drain port, it is not sposed to be in coolant, there is a dead air space in the block where it is sposed to go. I thought I would try the plugged hole on the driver's side about in the same place. I took out the plug and out pops anti-freeze!!! Another coolant drain port!! Is the parts guy wrong, is the knock sensor sposed to be in contact with water/anti-freeze?

Yes

KS screws into the block and picks up vibrations from the block itself( through the threaded part ).
The fact you have coolant there is because GM used the old block drain holes instead of making new holes

thanks,good info and tells what other forums I read about this said...
tomorrow I will see if the driver's side coolant drain port, directly across the engine where I had th KS hooked up on the passenger's side, will work when I directly screw it into the block without using the 45 pipe fitting. Another thing though, how would you seal the KS, with the purple telflon tape? Gorrila tape, I believe it's called? Or should I drain all the fluid and use high temp orange silicone...Or should I use erector seal like when working with iron or galvanized pipe? The KS came with a red gummy sealer that filled the treads on it when I bought it new, but now after taking it out, it has worn off and I know I will need something else to seal it.

I can't remember why exactly although I think it was header clearance, but I moved my knock sensor to the drivers side.

Because of clearance issures with my TPI engine swap, I have put on hugger headers. The ports in the block where I am sposed to put the KS are blocked...Right now I have the KS on the head coolant drain plug on the passenger side of the engine. I know this is not correct, but I am wondering if this will be a bad thing...In other words, should I bypass the KS and stick a 3.9K Resistor in place of the KS or will it be okay to just leave it in the head... I don't know if the KS will pick up the valves going up and down and think it is a knock, then retard the timing.
If I put a resistor in place, does that mean my EST module will not be working at all and should I leave it hooked up or disconnect it?

thanks yah, I think that might be whats causing my engine to run like crap. can a knock sensor affect the tachometer?

it would make my timing bounce around and run like crap. yes, replace it. i would use some teflon because mine was seized and broke off.
They screw into water ports because knock is detected through water vibrations IIRC.
Don't drop your new KS, they're fragile.
