time for the build any one wanna follow?

First ever build!!!!!!

hey to all i have a 92 firebird tbi ran great fast car for a tbi now i just want a lil more

so decided to go witha tpi!!

im doing this to learn mainly with great reward of power at the end

goal to get around 250 rwhp
and around 300 or up rwt

any suggestions or facts greatly appreciated

its all a budget build and wanting to keep it under 2k

now for the parts list

87 tpi setup
with ecm

lt1 cam

91 tpi heads

cold air intake

tuning kit

nice valve covers

possible rocker arms and springs

ofcourse feul pump and lines
probably just use a stock feul pump
although the one from hawks third gen looks promising (100 dollar difference)

possible 22 Ibs injectors or bosh 3 (iff i spelled them right)(reason for this idk if stock injectors would hold lt1 if it be robbing me or wat not)

and a used 92 drum brake posi rear end 3.42 or 3.73

i did the math if everything go smooth around 1500 (the only thing i didnt check was fuel lines)

(hooker headers also!!!)

if any one sees anything wrong with this setup let me kno!
(mainly head fittings)

Parts i have in possesion and or shipping
lt1 cam
headers
tpi unit
spark plugs and wires (possible amazon sent me wrong kind got them with a gift card)
duralast double timin chain and cover

rest is on the list

this all started with a me wanting to change the cam shaft and id figure with all this off hey why not convert seemed smart right!
all this will be done with me working my job then coming home and buildin then working then building the maybe sleep

get pics soon!

any feedback?

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

if every one looks around the forum u will see my threads regarding question even though most of them are stupid

well if every one looks around yall will see the post i have for this build probly caused abunch of headaches

it started with the body parts fan etc

Name: 111001_153908.jpg
Views: 72
Size: 58.5 KB

then the raditior

Name: 111001_171605.jpg
Views: 70
Size: 37.6 KB

water pump and all that good stuff
up next the intake and all the feul lines with some struggle (lol distributor and broke rotor butt lol long story) push rods lifter rocker arms

Name: 111004_172855.jpg
Views: 57
Size: 45.8 KB

followed by the cam after breakin a star wrench lol never use cheap tools had to drillher out and the bolt popped out with ease

Name: 111006_185636.jpg
Views: 51
Size: 35.8 KB

then i followed by taking of the wirre harness

Did any one else had to disconnect them from lights????????? from head lights and blinkers

got the majority off the wire harness of came to stump with the ground bolt on the passenger side.. . .

now then off to these "great flowing" manifolds

driver side was a snap the passenger side different story
im stuck on the last bolt closest to the firewall and air tube bolts are stripped making me resort to cutting them. .

and this is where im at now!!! not much done but all i have is a rachet set open end wrenches and some screw drivers lol (basic at home tools)

so far the funnest thing i have done in a while
now once my parts get here i will have more to come!!!!!!!!!

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

got home from work today and finally got the passenger exhaust manifold off
had to remove some stuff to get to it though

also find out the split between engine harness and light harness was about to connect them but ended up raining!!!

so thus concluded today

hopefully by the time im 20 she will run! :P

and possibly in the future better injectors

but was wondering if anyone knows of a good aftermarket cam for a 305???

thanks just curious all the ones i find have wild duration let me know

ps found out my tpi setup comes in the mail this weekend!!! going to get her and polish her up!!!!! )

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

so after finding specs on my lt1 cam very happy with what i bought now i wonder if those lt1 springs work for my tpi heads i just bought

and found specs on my heads
compared to lo3 heads

courtesy from this thread
https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tbi/...-headflow.html

305 heads, 1.84"/1.50"
187 iron LO3 head: 165 intake; 140 exh (Fast355)
081 iron head: 195 intake; 110 exh (ME Leigh)

from thaT THREAD
WAS wondering about the exhaust flow and be a good gain to to port the 081 heads to 140 exhaust for my setup??

depending how much it is. . . .

any one recomend some rocker arms was looking at jegs rocker arms they say to hhave a good gain in hp
http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...20100/10002/-1

with lt1 springs

and possibly after market intake manifold or port mine need to call some shops and ask for a pricing. . . .

like i said goal is to have 300 rwhp
and 300+ rwt

probably only see 250 rwt

after taxes decide to do some good transmission work

engine bay is looking good number on my ecm
i pulled 1228746

followed by these

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

25-30 hp on a stock engine. More on a modified one.
I can port your base manifold for 250 plus shipping. There's alot of time involved and when finished it'll flow like crazy! Plus the price is much more reasonable than an aftermarket base.

How much porting? It would be a full port job. I would port the base all the way through each port and match to whatever runners you're using.
Is that what you're asking?

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

to this forum

great place of info to have

by looking at the tbi heads (187)
compared to tpi (081)

u can see the difference

081 has good intaake flow crappy exhaust
187 is the opposite crappy intake good exhaust

now for good power gains with all the work ive got done to my 081
ibelieve i should have got some porting ...

now any opinions would be fantastic

just a small bit of porting to make the 081 exh match the 187 exh!

u think this is worth the money or should i go higher???? or stay stock with the heads
and leave it alone with three angle valve job and resurfaced (11 thousandths i believe) and new springs to handle a 530 lift

doing lots of research during the build helps for info!! but always should do before u start the build

geuss i like learning the hard way

all i need is a rear!!

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

no progress yet accept for a throttle cable
but been collecting alot of parts for this build and selling alot of parts as well

have everything accept for three things

wire harness
rear end (found)
and rear 16 inch rims to fit the rear end
and some feul stuff
i have found alot of parts that i need no to get my hands on them

i got my hands on 3.42 posi with disc brakes but i need sixteen to fit these brakes.
thats what lead me to the irocs found em on ebay for cheap and they are sixteens so hey why not!! they look good on 92 birds in my opinion!

so really excited to finish this build for a cruise!

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

FYI instead of cutting the cams pin, you could have tapped it in with a brass hammer. (hole should b long enuff).
The wire on the egr your pointing to can b left off if you dont have smog testing. I have had mine unplugged since ive owned it an no check engine light or problems.
good luck with your build.

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

For these cars you may also want to get an aluminum driveshaft as well from a 4th gen car. It reduces weight in your drivetrain and wont make your car shake at speeds over 90

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

i came to a conclusion,
but i am still crazy confused about it.
i will just have to get a new one . . .

or go back to stock and get a new chain

never would have thought that would have happens a part from autozone says that it ill fit and doesnt???

im sure the bolts should not hit
idk if anyone else has used the duralast timing set but if anyone has and had the same problem plz post it could be possibly just a faulty part . . .. .

if not others should stay away

imm just going to buy the double cam gear part if i can find it

still strange

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

if the stock one clears it I would look for another set, don't put a stretched out chain back on.

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

got some building done today not to much just got driver side header on and rocker arms and pushrods.
was abot to install the new intake and use my old intake bolts but the were different lengths even the ones without studs! and used my book but all the had was a pic of the tbi intake and ofcourse was impossible to know wich bolts go where compared to my intake...

call me stupid but i couldnt figure it out and didnt anna take chances of messing anything up.....

i have some questions plz fellow tgo members help!

for tpi do u even need the bolts with studs on top??

(i dont recall them on anything for the tbi . . .)

and can i use any intake bolts?? dont feel like dropping 69 bucks for intake bolts

found some summit ones for ten..

87 intake to 91 heads

also this caught my eye

the tbi intake on the front curves withe the block

my 87 tpi intake does not curve with it????

its strange bolts up but hangs over the block on the front .. is this normal?????

plz help thanks

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

Been a while since i posted!
So heres wat has been completed

headers
manifold
runners fuel rail plenum

it all looks great went through some troubles though..

i started with the headers before i went to work also before it rained.

headers

the driver side was easy slid it down put the gasket over took a bolt and slid it in the the middle hole. hand tighten the bolt then did the rest as well.

the passenger side wat a pain . . .
had to take off the hose from the radiator to the fire wall (idk what it is called forgive the ignorance) then had to drop the starter got the header on and tighten the bolts! followed by putting the starter on.. had to leave that one hose off and figure a way to reroute it

over all looks amazing with them on and mean

then my next day off onto the intake

INTAKE

on towards the intake this one gave me some problems alot!

put the rtv on then the intake gaskets followed by the manifold a pain to align!! after countless attempts it was finally alignedso i went onto the bolts.

tighen them down according to the pattern in the book was a strange one but got it down. then torque em to specs heres the problem three bolts stripped not the bolts the heads . . . ..

so here i as stumped i mean seriously disappointed.how could this happen ?am i done, is this it? i felt like giving up . . ..
i sat down and rested and thought hard with disappointment ... called autozone, talked to a fellow grease head tim. that i know had to have went through this.

he said ouch lol

either drill em (i wouldnt machine shop would)
or try smaller bolts. . .
decide to sit down again..
went to my bag of old intake bolts and said why not try em...

tighten them and they stayed tight !!! relief!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!was so happy no more tightening that leads to it being loose just tigh to tight!!was soo happy then with my old gooseneck use that bolt for one of the holes and same thing!

so was happy although i believe the goose neck bolt could be a problem in the future but ehhh only time will tell

fuel rails and runners

trial and error with this one put the fuel rail on first then loosen the them the put on the runners tighten them down . . . then had to loosen the bolts the ru nner to get to the certain boltson the rails,
this kept repeating itself. ..

got the gaskets on and all found out i missing bolts for the runners to plenum
and the plenum would not line up so going to handle this time tommorow for it was gettin cold and i had holes in my shoes .......

here are the pics enjoy!

love the look so far

Got alot done here lately stopped building cause i want to wait for all my parts to get here

so when i finish my build i will start adding lots of pictures and better info since it is hard to follow

EVEN though i after helping a fellow third gen owner put his rear end up under his beautiful ride, took a cruise in it me and the lady with him and i fell in love with lsx motors and ford rearends!!!

so when ever i can save will be time to throw that in my bird!

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

after setting lash wich im going to double check before i start her up
my wire harness came in from POCKET and man it looks good thanks to pocket so i will just describe my easy way to put it in

with a wire guide in one hand nd the harness in the other i just threw the harness on top off the motor as the pic shows

then took the ecm connectors and pushed them towards the cockpit

then try to follow the connectors since pockets harness was labled help this first timer out with my harness!

i open the book found the sensors and connected them.
not hard at all just really time consuming. But i found it easier to connect the driver side ,injectors, etc then followed by the passanger side
here is how she sits now with the harness in

warning crappy pic

you cann see it doesnt look bad i think i did great theres stll hoses gotta connect

For the record thisn did take alot of time due to the fact i would connect and then disconnect then connect etc etc , just to route it right once again thanks to pocket!!

Re: time for the build any one wanna follow?

If anyone realized the pics of the ac setup in my car. . well its terrible lines were all bent and kinked.
so i went to pulla part and picked the whole setup minus the clutch for fifty five bucks!!

then put her in and she looks good !

i will soon be going for a good ac clutch and condensor to hopefully help my ac work!

just waiting for fuel lines and some parts from jegs then i should be done with the motor minus hoses wich brings me to a question

the vacums on the side of the throttle body are they needed?

if any one can help out with vacumm lines por send me in the right direction also removed the smogg pump

so more to come soon!

once im done with this and starther up and hope she work fine i will describe difference . But even then the build will continue with rims lowering shocks and rear bushings also front and a new rear money is limited though!

so thanks for reading

to be continued.. .

Looks like you may have a TBI balancer and a TPI timming cover. Better get that figured out for sure before you get the water pump on..
