leaking intake manifold

so i have a good sized oil leak from rear of motor , softball size when i sit. checked with a steathascopeat rear of manifold and and can hear a sucking or blowing air noise when i shut car off . would everybody agree it sounds like leaking intake manifold?????? i washed fire wall area down whent for short drive and firewall has oil all over again, dosent look like ditributor or oil pressure sending unit leaking, even though they get oil on them from leak. any ideas. thanks

Re: leaking intake manifold

You will have to clean it again and have a friend rev it to 1000 or so rpm. A little above your idle speed and you watch carefully. Sounds like something is spraying oil back there. You can't fix it if you don't know what it is.

Re: leaking intake manifold

Leaks at the china wall are pretty common. After you clean it, start the car and watch closely back there. You should see it coming out. Driving the car makes air turbulence which makes the oil spray all over, which makes the location harder to pinpoint.

If you decide to change the intake gasket, don't use the rubber china wall gaskets that come with the kit. Run a 1/4" bead of RTV across the china wall, and drop the intake down nice and straight.

Re: leaking intake manifold

One of those inspection mirrors that they sell at the parts store will help you look back there.

Re: leaking intake manifold

I've fixed a leak on the back of the intake before doing this:

Hook a vacuum pump to a vacuum line to put your crankcase under vacuum.

Listen/feel for the vacuum leak.

Put black RTV on your finger and shove it where the leak is, it will pull the RTV into the area and seal the leak.
