Injectors?

So, every once in a while I get a kick to start messing with my bird. It sits most of the time. But every once in a while I run it.
I had noticed, after replacing the F/P, a fuel smell. Another time I noticed a small hissing from the fuel rails. Then another time I noticed a small puddle on the intake. I bought some O rings and intake gaskets, but never got around to replacing them. The other day I went to start it, and a huge puddle formed under my car!

I was hoping that the leak wasn't that bad, but.....

So I started pulling everything apart, (and if you've done it, you know what I'm talking about when I say everything!!!!!) and the O rings are completely deteriorated. Also, there is some discoloration under the rails. Like by the pressure regulator.

In another thread I asked about swapping out a later (non-9th injector) manifold. I was told to burn a specific burn into my prom.

The main question(s) I have is: How do I do this? Can I do it myself? What do I need to buy to do this? Do I need to get another set of rails? Or can I just block off the 9th injector?

Second question: Do the injectors leak? I heard that the Bosch injectors are not the good ones to get. How can I tell if these are Bosch? I'm in the San Gabriel valley (east of Los Angeles). Where around here can I take them to get them matched? Or tested? Or should I just get another set? If so, what would be good to get? The long block is a mildly built 383, good flowing GMPP heads, and it did pass smog, which is something that's REAALLYYYY important for me. PLEASE don't say "just pay the $450 and get it passed".

As for the intake I was talking about in the other post, it's the Accel Super Ram, I believe.

I'd like to run this intake. But if there's too much involved, then I'll have to wait to start this project, and just put it back together for now with the stock stuff.

Thank you in advance.

Re: Injectors?

Yes you have to burn a new PROM if you remove the 9th injector in order to richen the mixture when cold.

There is a vendor on this site that sells a 9th injector delete kit. It includes the hardware for rail end and the runner end.

Re: Injectors?

Who told you that the bosch injectors are not good???? IMO they are the best injectors out there, hands down. They are reliable, efficient, and are known to improve performance. Are you sure they weren't talking about the multecs???

What are the part numbers on the injectors. I'll see if I can cross reference them.
I know where across the country, but we'll be more than happy to clean & flow test them for you.

I read it on here somewhere. I think I also read it on a Corvette website. When I was looking up how to change the O rings. Pretty much across the boards that's what I read. I'd be happy to keep them, but if they are stock 21lbs (I think that's stock) would the feed a 383? Especially at higher RPMs?

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. How much?

What I'd really like to do, is, well, everything that I can myself. I'll get what I need to burn PROMs. I have sort of looked things up, but didn't fully get what to do. I'm in the process of researching more, but need a little bump. What are the good programs out there? I remember seeing a website with some free and some pay-for programs. And they also had maps to start out with too. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Re: Injectors?

3 easy steps to happiness

1. Buy a set of Bosch III's from Southbay; you won't regret it
2. 9th injector block off kit from Hawks; on here
3. Re cal prom from Tuned Performance; on here

Result is pure fun and happiness.

These are the guys I personally used, there are other options out there though.

(not promoting anyone, to each his/her own. 2cents:

Good Luck!!!

Re: Injectors?

Wow! $170 each injector? That sound like a good injector! WAIT! $170 for ALL 8!!!!

Seriously?!?!!?!!? Rockauto sells stock injectors, the cheapest one for like $26 each. That's $200 right there! Looks like I know what I'mma do!

Looking into the Re Cal right now. If I'm getting this right, (which I've put all of the time it takes to search for "Tuned Performance") they are literally right down the freeway from me.

Thanks a bunch. Anymore questions, I'll be back. If not, I'll give an update as to what's been going on, and what's done.

Re: Injectors?

Ok, I think what I'm gonna do is pull the intake and runners from another motor I have. The one with the Super Ram that I want to put on this (the 383 in the car now) motor. At the same time, I'll check to see what injectors are in there. This way I can use the entire manifold, and the rails. So I won't need to worry about blocking off the 9th injector.

Long story short, I bought a pretty well built 350 TPI motor from a '91 or '92 Camaro. It's a speed density set up. I was gonna put it in my Elcamino, but I had to get rid of that car. I still have the motor. It's got everything from the intake to the pan, flywheel to the accessories, harness, stock ECU and an Accel DFI unit. It has an Accel Super Ram on it, and this is what I want to use. It's behind some stuff in the garage right now, so I have to move that out of the way before I can pull the intake.

I do know the guys from Car Craft put in a "performance" PROM when they were doing things to it. I pulled the computer, (it was hanging cause they never put it back right) and pulled off the PROM cover to see if it was stock. So I wouldn't mind getting rid of that one for a real performance PROM.

So, I have come to the understanding that there was only one computer from '87 to '89. Is this correct?

Re: Injectors?

Ok, so looked at the other motor, and the injectors are mix-matched. They are probably stock anyway. So looks like I'm gonna get a set of injectors, and a prom.

Southbay, I'm gonna figure out what I need, or want, then I'll have some questions. And I also am gonna look into Tuned Performance. But the site just shows parts pulled from cars. Do they do the re cal? Or do I just buy the computer as a whole unit?
