Fuel system troubleshooting tips.
1986 305 TPI Fuel system
Last Sunday I planned on going to a car show down in Midvale UT. (80mi round trip) Tanked her up and thought it was time to put in some FIC (fuel Injector System Cleaner). Started the journey and about mid-way, I get a service engine soon light. Performance didn't change, checked my gauges and checked engine RPM and acceleration...all were nominal. On the way back, it came on again. When I spun her around and backed her into the garage I got a nasty raw fuel smell in the compartment. What do you think it could be? I have another car show on Saturday...need some quick trouble shooting tips...
Thanks!!!

Re: Fuel system troubleshooting tips.
You need to narrow down where the fuel odor is coming from, rear of the car or from under the hood.

Re: Fuel system troubleshooting tips.
After start up, it smelt a bit like raw gas at the rear of the car, but cleared up.
Let the motor get out of open loop and get up to temp. Felt each injector and all were pulsing, except for the back two injectors on the right side. they were faint.
Could the fuel be pooling up in the fuel rail? Went back and took a wiff of the exhaust smells a bit rich.
Also, I had the TPI off last fall to sand and buff the TPI Head. Put everything back on as advertised. should I have checked and re-torqued the TPI Runners after a certain amount of mileage? Just throwing that out.

Re: Fuel system troubleshooting tips.
Okay, now I went to south bay injectors. what would be the stock injector PSIG? I saw 19PSIG will that work if I need the injectors? Also If I may ask, do you know whether or not GM put a factory in-line fuel filter anywhere? I remember when I changed the pump in 2001, it simply had a strainer pouch on the bottom of the pump assy. Tried to get the codes read at O'Reilly's with a OBD-1 reader and nothing pulled up. Course the service engine soon light wasn't on. That's the other wild thing, when I take the car around in the city the light doesn't come on...the darn thing comes on when I am at freeway speeds.

I bought one of these at Wal-Mart for about $20. I just leave it underneath the seat for those rare times when you need to scan for codes while out on the road. Comes with a book that tells you what every code means.

Re: Fuel system troubleshooting tips.
Code read EGR Valve. Changed the in-line fuel filter just for safety sake.
- Fuel Pressure read 35@idle and 45@ increased RPM's. No leaking from the fuel pressure regulator so that's a good thing. So fuel isn't a issue.
- I am going to let her cool down and then commence to taking of the TPI again (took it off about 6 months ago to polish the plenum.
-- I am thinking about just taking out the T-40 bolts that attach the runners, disconnect the throttle bracket and ease it out of there. Hopefully, the gaskets should stay put, don't you think?
-- EGR valve has to come from out of state, so I have a few days to take my time and do this right.
- Now, before I simply buy the EGR Valve, should be safe and replace the EGR solenoid as well?
-- I was also thinking about changing out the Fuel evaporator filter (in canister) as well...maybe it's dirty. could be the smell I got. Any other factors I should be aware of before I start this process?
