FFS, what could I have done installing my runners and plenum?

So, last weekend, installed new injectors...and a bout with my FP gauge, cycled the pressure several times, all holding and no leaks at all.

Got my gaskets in today, bolted the runners and plenum in...went to fire off the car (good thing battery was low and didn't have enough juise to spin it over) and heard a hissing sound.

Went to get the charger, came back and smelled fuel.

Yep...intake manifold on the left side, had puddles of fuel in it.

Had my daughter cycle the key, sure enough #7 injectors spraying fuel out from the top under the fuel rail.

So, it held pressure and didn't leak a drop, until I bolted up everything else...ya, will figure it out later tonight, or in the morning, but looking for "been there, had it happen to me too" replies...sure an Oring can't go to hell from sitting for a few days, so that would lead me to a damaged injector, but how?

Open to all thoughts, comments and yes..."ya dumb chit, this is what you did" comments/replies.

Grrr, getting too old for this stuff

i doubt it would cause that big of a leak... but did you lubricate the o-rings before you pushed em into the manifold?

Did you have to loosen any of the four fuel rail bolts in order to install the runners, and then maybe forgot to re-tighten them?

Re: FFS, what could I have done installing my runners and plenum?

Which injectors did you use, stock or Bosch 3's? Stock injectors are installed into the fuel rail first then the assembly is installed into the manifold. When I bought my Bosch 3's from South Bay, if my memory serves me correctly, their instructions were clear that you must install the injectors into the manifold first then install the fuel rail.

Re: FFS, what could I have done installing my runners and plenum?

If it leaks from the top between the fuel rail and the injector, make sure that you locked the injector in place and the oring is not cut. Try to spin the injector back and forth to help seat the oring in the rail before you take anything out.
I doubt this, but did the old oring stay inside the rail before you put the new injector in?

Re: FFS, what could I have done installing my runners and plenum?

The orings were lubed prior to install, put them in the intake first (SB's Bosch 3's).
Dididn't have to loosen any thing to get the runners in place

No orings left in the rails, didn't think of spinning it before pulling the runners again last night-doh..

But what has me scratching my head is they held fine a few days ago when I tested them, (waiting for my gaskets to come in), only difference is putting the runners/etc on yesterday.

Didn't pull the rail yet, was getting too late, will try spinning the leaking one see if it helps.

Saving grace is it was a good thing the battery needed a charge, otherwise you guys would probably be posting links of my burned down garage and car

Yeah I've nicked a few orings tinkering with different injectors. It's very easy to do if you don't pay close attention and never try to force them. I try twisting gently on each injector as I'm pushing down the fuel rail. They'll usually just slide easily into place that way.

Yep, trashed the Oring...musta just had enough left on it to not leak a few days back...well, good thing my gaskets weren't in yet, hate to think of what would have happened if I had it all together and it started leaking running down the road later on.

I'm 55, maybe we should start a old guys thread. Lol Seems like maybe we have forgotten more than we remember. I had removed my fuel rails once and thought i had them tightened only to find out while the car was running that i forgot to tighten them. I had fuel spraying everywhere. lesson learned.

Case in point: Got my chip back from Brian @Tuned, grabbed the wife and fired up the car with the hood up....purred like a kitten.......till I reved it up to check it out........all of a sudden spray and steam EVERYWHERE! I thought I blew it up!
Nope, Just forgot to tighten that clamp on the heater hose that she asked about 5 minutes earlier!

Re: FFS, what could I have done installing my runners and plenum?

I use the "CRS" syndrome, can't remember shlitz

Well, she's alive and kicking now.
That's the first time in 3 or 4 years since it ran, need to put the muffler on, weld the tips up, then save up for some tires...only a few thousand miles on them, but 15 years old and dry rotting.

Might call the Ex over before swapping tires, see if she wants to do any high speed runs for old times sake
