700r4 diagnosis?

I have a 89 700r4 which had been rebuilt by a shop recently. It shifted well. Recently i took off the tb to get to the thermostat . re adjusted the t/v cable and it worked well for awhile. Real recently there has been a delay into 2nd gear with definately NOT a positive shift, im talking lexus smooth. Now there isnt a engine flare up but the shift lags like crazy. Ive adjusted my t/v cable again and again with no results. By the way on average how many times do your t/v cable adjusters click? If i start in the manual gear ranges (boosted by the rev. boost valve) it shifts well. But otherwise it is not to my liking. Any ideas on what made it go south so fast?

Send a message via ICQ to transfixleo
To adjust the TV Cable skip the book method and do this: Press the 'D' shaped lock button on the adjuster and loosen the cable setting (The black housing that the metal cable is in will move forward). Now, have someone floor the gas pedal while you check to see if the throttle plate is open all the way. Usually they are off a little and will wiggle. Do whatever you have to do to get it open solid. Now, with the pedal still floored, press the 'D' button and pull the cable casing (the black tube) back as hard as you can (putting maximum tension on the metal cable) and release the button. You now have the engine, tranny and gas pedal all in sync at WOT. Mark the cable casing so if for some reason it gets moved you can know where to put it again. The problem with the 'self adjust method' is that it bends things and puts them permanently out of whack. It is also the full TV setting, which is theoretically what the GM method does.

hey
I have an 86 Iroc-z 305 tpi with a 700r4 and mine went into lexus shifting mode as well All of a sudden! One day after I got some tires put on (and they let it fall off the jack...with the tires on) it decided to start shifting like a caddy! Sometimes my torque conv. will lock up...sometimes it won't. How was your torque converter acting? was it still locking up all the time? Mine used to lock up in 2nd straight thru. It was to the point that I had to manuel shift most of the time if i was i trafic because the shift would make it lug. Now... I can't even feel it shift at all! Rpm might drop about 100 per shift. grrrr
Does that describe what yours is doing?
I am trying to figure out how to fix mine too and am wandering if it's the same as yours. Maybe your fix would work for me too. I havn't adjusted the tv cable. Would that make it do what it does? But i have changed the fluid and filter with no change.
Thanks

You know i attributed my non-lock up condition to my engine running obscenly cold. i changed the thermostat back to hot and now, its either engauging so smooth (possibly due to my lack of torque multiplication through 2.77 gears) , or its not working, OR its engaging way early, because yeah my car doesnt flare AT ALL Just has a lag-*** long 1-2 shift, real mushy, no flare but not positive at all...but then again if it was locked, then there would be no "cushion" between shifts....im confused...damnit

did your tv cable adjustment help at all? I am wandering if that could even be the problem... Don't know much about tranny's. Just trying to narrow it down a bit.

Well im in rebuilders school and one thing they've taught us is to eliminate variables. The Tv cable has been adjusted every way possible with no results.... My thing is i still have a few months warranty left so im going to let them figure it out. get this when i changed my fluid and filter, i found a bolt had fallen out of my tcc solenoid. high quality work i must say
