speedo gear replacement

This is kind of a non technical question, but there is a clip that holds the drive gear in place, and when I finally got the drive gear removed, the clip went flying accross the floor. My question is that there are two places about an inch apart that the clip can go. Does anyone know whether it goes in the hole closest to the front of the car or the back of the car?

It goes in the hole to the front. The rear hole is for corvettes only. I just changed mine yesterday, and looked it up in my manual.
