Playing Devil's advocate ... could this be the BEST 700R4?
Check it out ...
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm
This tranny seems to have all the latest strong hard parts. I know that Dana at Pro-Built is very well known for his strong 700s but the Mega Raptor seems to include all the latest hard parts to make something that is much stronger.
Just wanted to post this to stir things up a little and to make sure that everyone is aware of what new hard parts are out there. I'll probably still be going with a TH400 + Gear Vendor's unit due to my plan of running a Vortech YS on a 400+ ci small block.

Off the top of my head: People inside the trade are finding out that the "special" shell is giving problems. The oversized Servo has been known to break bands/shells. I have heard of the 5 pinion setup blowing up and taking the tranny out completely. Oh and that annoying sound that comes on with that page is enough reason for me to not look at them again. Is that what you wanted?

Hmmm..... $2K?........ Me thinks you can do better for less.
And any trans builder that speaks of how good a trans part is by qouting how much HP it can handle is talking out his ****.

700R4
I don't know what you guy's are looking for? But, if you read any magazines out there it seems Level 10 in New Jersey builds some of the stoutest trans' in the business. Plus they stand behind their work. They are not cheap, but, they are good. They have done a few trans' for me (4L60E & 700R4) and I have never had a problem. They did the trans in that Impala SS in Florida that runs 10.00's @ 133mph in the quarter @ like 4100 - 4200 Lbs. with a 700R4. That is impressive! I hear that trans is 2 years old as well.
I know they also did the trans in the first 9 second Grand National way back when. It was Jim Del Assandro who ran true street cars with only 3.8l motors but that wasn't a 700R4.
They say their trans. will hold three times + the factory specs of a stock 700R4. I think their web site is Levelten.com

Matt87GTA I saw the pics of your car on the website. Nice ride. My quesion is how do you like the 4th gen rearend 3.42s. Im debating whether to get the rearend or put 3.73s in my 9 bolt borg warner (stock 3.27s). What's cheaper and easier. what did it run for you to put that rearend in. I know I have to do something with the rear brakes but what? See sig

It is now almost 2 YEARS later ....
I am bringing this back from the dead simply because nobody else seems to be marketing a tranny with this many upgrades. As a quick update ...
The Torque Drive Package now includes a reliable sun shell that is good to 600+ ft/lbs of torque.
The original aftermarket 5-pinion planets were unreliable but now companies are using Genuine GM OEM 5-pinion planets which are MUCH stronger and obviously more reliable than the 4-pinion planets in our thirdgen 700R4's.
Any new input on this tranny?
Tim

I have to say that those trannies are the SHIZZY... (or some equally HIP slang term)... I love mine... Granted, I'm not using the full potential of the torque drive package that I got with mine (I ordered a 700R4 Raptor with the torque-drive upgrade), but the tranny functions perfectly!! I'm happy even though it was expensive... Its nice to know I've got a stout tranny back there..

I think you know what hard parts that you can use in a 700R4. ( input drum mod, planets, sunshell and stuff ) The real question is who has a good track record ( lots of 700R4s not 4L60E ) and who can tune the trans to your combo for good results.
Both of our cars run the same times right now, but I have Way more torque than you ( maybe 200 ft lbs or more at 3k ) and you have lots more horsepower than me above 5k now do you think my trans will be the best for your car.
The trans in my car is from Pro-built it's his "limited street" trans with G.M. 5 pinion planets in it. after the first few weeks I wanted to change the w.o.t. shift points to better match my car and after a call to him that was done. The next thing was to get the part throttle drivability better to match my Yank SS 3600 converter and motor combo one more call and the springs were in the mail the next day. Last was a 2-3 shift change to get the shift timing down to .2 seconds he droped a new longer servo pin and a modified spring plate in the mail ( all at no charge ) and after installing them I don't think you can find a better trans for my setup from anyone.
The customer service and tuning after the sale is what sets him apart from the rest. You can get a crate trans or motor and drop it in a car and most people will be happy that's not the case with you or me.

I've been leaning toward a Mega Monster from these guys, anyone have any input? http://www.thmonster.com/transmissio...0r4/index.html
Seems to have alot of the good stuff (perhaps not all the hardened stuff of some of the others, but at least the sunshell), and their prices are very fair, they often run a special on Ebay where you can snag it for $850ish with no core charge...
Whattya think?
