Spedo gear Q's

My friend just swaped from 2.73 to 3.73 in his 89 camaro[700R4] and needs to find some spedo gears but the local dealerships say this cannot be done and the spedo has to be recalibrated. I personally thought this was BS so I was wondering if anyone here could shed some light on the subject of weather or not he can get some new spedo gears and how to intall or does he need to shell out some money on a spedo recalibration?

I think that the camaros had cable driven speedos until 90 so I dont see how they could re-calibrate it. Even on the electric ones in the thirdgens you have to change the gears in the tranny to change your speedo. I would tell him to ask someone esle.

Yes, you can get the proper speedo drive & driven gears for the swap. Check out the tech article section on the main page, then go to drivetrain and there is a detailed article describing exactly what you need to do. I used it to find out what gears I needed for my 2.73 to 3.42 swap. I then got the speedo gears from my GM dealer. Both gears are at the tail section of the trans and are not that difficult to change.....good luck!
