TH350 shifter cable ???

Dropped a TH350 in place of the original T5 in my 86 TA. I picked up a stock 700R4 shifter and shift cable from a car in the junkyard. I bought the Hurst torque arm conversion kit. With the shifter installed using the same holes in the floor the T5 shifter bolted too, the stock 700R4 shift cable is about an inch to long. If i put the shifter in reverse, I can bolt the cable to the arm on the transmission. However, the cable binds if I try and move the shifter into gear. I have 2 different shift cables out of 700R4 3rd gen cars, and they are both an inch to long. Does the shifter need to be moved back or do I need a different cable? Why would the cable bind to the point it would not go into any gear (and I leaned on the shifter good to the point one cable actually burst). The arm on the trans moves by hand with little effort, so its not stuck. I'm also using the brackets included in the Hurst kit that holds the cable in place on the trans. fluid pan.

Anything I'm need to look at? Almost about to go and buy the TH350 3rd gen Megashifter if i can't get this figured out.

Thanks
