When I'm driving down the road, I am hearing a strange ticking noise. The faster I go, the faster the ticking. It's loud enough that I can hear it in my car. Could my rear end be getting ready to go out or something? If I'm stopped, I hear no ticking. Only when I'm moving. The car seems to drive just fine. No lurching, or grinding, or anything unusual. Nothing on the tires or dragging on the ground when I looked undeneath. Any ideas are appreciated! Thanks! Matt

Sounds rather like you need a rear U-joint. They make a squeak actually, that's so short it often sounds like a tick.

I had this same sound on my 97ws6. First off, check for nails in your tires. if none, then you should pull the rear cover. My ticking noise wasnt loud and sounded like a nail was in my tire. the sound kept getting louder as the day went on and my rear end finnaly locked up on me on the street. I grenaded the ring gear pretty bad. But like i said, check for nails first and then if you can, pull the cover and turn the wheels while you watch the gears. I wish I did this. I learnt the hard way

I figured it out. I got all dressed up in my coveralls, and jacked the rear end up and put it on jacks. It was a crappy day here in Oklahoma. About 55 degrees and drizzly. So, I'm about to pull the rear diff cover, and look up and notice a humongus zip tie around my drive shaft. I know who did it. Some guy I work with. We've had a practical joke war going on for a while now. I put a big sign on the tailgate of his truck that said "I love big gay men". He drove around for a week with it on there. I guess the zip tie was his way of getting me back. Pretty good one. I would have been real ticked if I had taken my car apart. So, I snpped it off and the ticking is gone! The excess zip tie was slapping the chassis. Now I just need some ideas for getting the SOB back! Matt

LMFAO!! I was just about to tell you to check your driveshaft for zipties...one of the oldest tricks in the book! We just did that to a new guy in my squadron on his Mustang last week. He couldn't figure out the noise and was about to take his car to a shop.
If you wanna get back at him, remove his driveshaft

What aircraft are you a crew chief on? I'm guessing you're stationed at Robbins AFB? I'm a crew chief on the AWACS at Tinker. I work depot now so I don't have to deploy anymore. Being a crew chief, you have to keep your guard up. Somebody is always looking to mess with you. I've seen guys come up with things I would have never thought of. A zip tie on my drive shaft for example. Matt

I'm an HH60G Pavehawk crew chief at Moody AFB. Yeah I've seen some crazy stuff, sometimes people go overboard so watch your back because payback can be a b!tch, lol.
