how can I tell when my TV cable is in need of replacement??

Car: 91 Camaro RS
Engine: 305 TBI
Transmission: Pro-Built Automatic/Vigilante 2800
how can I tell when my TV cable is in need of replacement??
I tried adjusting via the service manual and all I got out of it was 1 click and the car didn't shift right. I went ahead and adjusted it using the other method and it's better but I just want to know how you can tell when it needs replaced.
