I have a stock 95 Z28 with the 4L60E. It seems to not want to shift into overdrive, it just stays in 3rd. And when it seems to want to shift into overdrive, it makes a weird whining/groaning noise that seems to come from the rear. But if I move the shifter back to 'drive' the noise goes away. I think it's getting worse now. Under mild to moderate acceleration, it will not shift to 2nd unless I let off the gas a little. I'm not getting any SES lights or anything like that so I'm assuming it's not a bad shift solenoid (if that has anything to do with it at all)

I first checked the fluid and it looked and smelled slightly burned, but the level was fine. It was a darker red but it wasn't silver like I've seen in other burnt up trannies before. So I changed the filter and fluid. When I pulled the pan off, the little pan magnet was full of metallic sludge!

Well, changing the fluid and filter didn't fix my problem but I wasn't surprised. I'm guessing my tranny is toast, but I'm also wondering if a bad torque converter could cause the above problems?? Since there's no TV cable to mess with, would erroneous computer inputs cause it? I doubt it would, but I wanna eliminate any variables before I pull the tranny out. This really sucks and I just bought this car 3 months ago. Thanks for any suggestions!

It definatly sounds like the band is dead or dying a slow death. The only way to fix a band is to yank it. While its out, have a good look at the foward sprag, it must lock in one direction and spin in the other. If its locked up in both directions, it will cause a binding condition when it tries to go into 4th and will smoke a band if something else doesn't break first.

I don't think its a solenoid, usually when a solenoid goes bad, it will start out in 2nd or 3rd gear. In order to obtain first, both solenoids must be energized and in working order. If first works, then the solenoids work (unless one is clogged). The only thing 2nd and 4th have in common is the 2-4 Band (see how that works )

Thanks for the response...what you said makes sense, especially about the solenoids.

I guess I know what I'll be doing next weekend.
