wc t-5 - reverse

I just had my world class t-5 rebuilt and I just got done putting it in. I took it for a drive and it seemed fine until I had to put it in reverse. In reverse there is a really loud gear-on-gear noise. Any idea on what this might be? Did the guy who rebuilt my tranny screw up? I can shift it through all the other gears without any noise at all.

reverse doesn't have a syncro so there would be some noise, does it do it all the time? tried double clutching?

This must have been an auto to T-5 conversion....

Push in the clutch, put it in a forward gear, and then before you let the clutch out again, put it into reverse. Like ede said, the T-5 reverse has no synchro, so it's normal for it to grind if you don't do that, like about every other manual transmission ever made until a few very recent ones. People who know how to drive a stick shift don't have trouble with that.

If you're doing that and it still grinds, then you have clutch issues. That would include the possibility of needing a pilot bearing/bushing.

Also, if you're referring to the tranny "whining", thats normal for reverse.

ede and pauldaniel26: the sound is there whenever I am moving in reverse. This sound is not normal. It's not as loud under power but when I push in the clutch and I'm still coasting backwards it gets really loud.

RB83L69: This was not an auto to manual conversion. This car has never been an automatic. I always shift into 5th before shifting into reverse...just habit. And I know how to drive stick...been driving it for years. I will check into the pilot bushing though.

I took out the T-5 that was in the car (which never made this sound), and put in the freshly rebuilt one and now the sound is there. I'm supposed to take it back to the guy who rebuilt it and see what he says so I'll let you know what happens. Thanks.

Trust me, it's normal. My did this from day 1, even after a complete rebuild. Also, you need to go from a forward gear to reverse on all T5's or you'll be greeted with a nice grind.

Mine whines but isn't that bad. You should here my protege5 in reverse. Sounds like a band saw! Even when I push in the clutch!

well I took it back to the guy and he said it is normal for a newly rebuilt tranny to wine a little more than an older one. He listened to it and said his daughters Saturn was louder so i guess I'm in good shape
