Flexplate question.

Ok fixin to swap in a pre-85 engine into my 91 RS 305 TBI AUTO. I am needing to know what type of flexplate I need. I have been searching the archives and have come up with this.

83 - 85 Camaro V8 flexplate, 153 tooth

Another thing I couldnt figure out is does the older engine need a internally or externally balanced flexplate??? Just so I know.

I checked and Autozone had them for like $30 damn that is cheap.

Re: Flexplate question.

Your flexplate choice is perfect as long as it's not a 400. The flexplate you chose will work with your stock starter.

Yep, a passenger car should be a 153; trucks tend towards the 168 tooth wheels. I think any 68-85 neutral balance Chevrolet engine 153 tooth flexplate will work (basically everything except 400 SBC & 454 BBC)

The odd shaped journal on the rear of a 68-85 305/350 crank is the weight on those cranks. You'll notice the later model flywheels / flexplates have an added weight.

Check your stater bolt pattern. If it's straight in line you need the 168 tooth flywheel, if it's staggered you need the 153. Never take anything for granted. My car had a 168 on an auto trans. You never know what people have done in the 13 years since your car left the factory.

I have asked you twice before to quit posting misinformation.

Here are two Chevrolet starters for a 153 tooth flexplate; both
are straight across bolt pattern & requires two different length
bolts; 168 is staggered and has 2 equal length bolts:

Additional tech tip:

This "305" starter will fit in a 93-97 F-body T56 bellhousing:

This "350" starter will not fit in a 93-97 F-body T56 bellhousing:

Oops! You're totally right. Probably shouldn't post in the wee hours of the morning while I'm falling asleep. Everyone goofs every now and then.
