Anyone know what this stuff is? I assume its a synthetic lube, but non of my local dealers stock it. They tell me they have to order it by the case which is 9 qts at 10 bucks each plus 20 shipping. Are there any aftermarket eqivalent products. I have a 9 bolt aussie rear.
Yes i was referring to the gear oil. Whats everyone else running? I was using regular gear lube with the posi additive, but this caused wierd problems once the stuff reached its normal operating temp. According to the owners manual for the irocs gm requires this special lube.
I don't know what your owners manual says that you are supposed to use. My 1989 camaro GM service manual says to use SAE 80W-90 GL5 gear oil (GM #1052271 or 1052272) mixed with limited slip additive (GM #1052358). I am currently using Mobil 1 75W-90 synthetic gear oil with limited slip additive without any problems. It can be found at most auto parts stores.
I have just finished going thru my owners manual for the 1989 camaro and 1986 trans-am. The 1989 camaro lists what I mentioned earlier as the proper lubricant. The 1986 trans-am mentions what you are stating. However, this is where the difference is. I listed 80W-90 gl5 gear oil with a limited slip additive mixed in. The special lubricant you are mentioning is the 80W-90 gl5 gear oil pre-mixed with the limited slip additive. The newer model cars tell you to add the limited slip additive to the gear oil.
Thanks for repling Trickster. Im not stating anything, im just
asking what this stuff is. I believe some of the confussion is that in 89 the base irocs and trans ams became nothing more than a stick on upgrade from the regular cars. the 85 to 88 iroc and trans ams came standard with the hi po suspenssion parts meaning disc brakes all around and low profile tires and 9 bolt aussie rear. In 89 they had the drum brakes and 10 bolt corporate rear, the hipo parts were an option. The manual states that no additives should be used in these cars. I guese ill just grab some syntetic stuff and see what happens. Thanks

You say you want to know what this stuff is. Okay, as I mentioned in the previous post, this is what you are supposed to use now. I realize what you are saying your manual tells you to use and that it tells you not to use any additives with it. This is because it is the limited slip additive already pre-mixed with the gear oil. They no longer use this stuff at the dealerships anymore. They use the items that I have mentioned and has been confirmed by talking to two seperate GM dealerships. Also, nice to know that my 89 Iroc is nothing more than a stick on upgrade to a base camaro. Oh well.
I missed That service bulletin Trickster. No offense to your car, obviously you dont have a base car with that 350 and auto. I just meant you had a choice in 89 especially when it came to those over priced gatorbacks. At 200 a pop they get real expensive fast!
