Here's my situation....transmission went out a week ago, so I installed a used one a friend gave me, but I can't get it to shift into 2nd, 3rd, or OD.....we think MAYBE there's some trash blocking a valve body or somtehing, so we're going to drop the pan and check it out.....
The one I put in worked fine when it was taken out of a 91 GTA. I took the pan off, installed a shift kit (triple checking every step throughout the way, so it's not installed wrong), cleaned up the valve body, reinstalled, new filter, and used B&M trickshift.
I have P, I have R, I have N, and I have OD/D/2/1, BUT it won't shift out of 1st into any other gear. The TV cable is adjusted properly, although I also pulled it out to check if that might be the problem....it wasn't. Trans fluid is full.
I used a new TC, so it's definatly good. However, I suspect that my old TC went out, and the old transmission MIGHT actually be OK.
The old one has R, and never slipped or anything, so I'm thinking that the TC just F*ed up, but I didn't want to install it and it be messed up.
I did a search, and the only thing I can think of is the governor. Could the problem with the "new" one be the governor? Which side is it on, the drivers side, or the passenger, and how does it come off?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Definatly sounds like a govener problem. Like its plugged or something. Im pretty sure you have to drop the pan to get at it. It should be near the tailshaft housing.
OK, I checked the governor, it was fine. I also unhooked the TV cable (tranny shop told me to) and it shifted. I hooked it back up, readjusted it (same way the 3X before) and it still shifted.
HOWEVER, it stopped shifting later. Seems like once the fluid gets warm, it doesn't want to shift.
Also, the TC doesn't seem to have that high of a stall, until the fluid gets warm, then it stalls higher, but too high. I brake stalled it just to check it, and it still wasn't spinning at 2300.
Sounds to me like you dident install the check balls correctly or maybe placed a different size ball in the wrong spot. A few other ones that can cause this are an improperly installed pressure regulator or booster valve and lets not forget wrong gaskets. But it really sound like a check ball.

a quick question i have 4 check balls in the case as per trans-go shiftkit instructions and 1 check ball in the valve body... D
the instructions show 3 check balls in the valve body though. 1 far left, 1 middle, and 1 top right made of something weird like copper i forget.
Dana said forget about the one in the middle, you dont need it you blocked off that hole when you put the plugs in the plate. the one on the left I installed. the one to the far right made of that weird material I didnt see or install at all, i cant figure out what the instructions are talking about. is it retained in the valve body already?

Just incase you need to hijack the thread again.
If you were to do a search about a year back I and a couple others uploaded some pics of valve body/case check ball locations. I think I uploaded a few different years too.

That gives me an idea. Do you suppose I should upload the instructions to the trans-go shift programing kit onto my thread "Rebuilding your 700R4? Check this out!" so people can get an idea of whats involved and maybe someone who loses their instructions can have it available?

So do you have 1st and 2nd or just 1st? If you only have 1st, Park, reverse, and neutral, it definately sounds like a problem with the transgo install. This situation has come up a few times. One member just needed to completely clean the valve body, including valves that wern't touched in the install. Another had the incorrect 3-2 control valve installed due to not deburring the hole good enough. Forgotten checkballs won't cause a problem but misplaced checkballs may block needed passages. Good luck.
