As long as the input shaft doesn't bottom out on it when it is bolted up to the bellhousing, it probably should be okay. The main concern to me would be if the bearing damaged. I "carefully" hammered one in also many years ago, and it worked fine for quite a few miles. Then I started having problems with what seemed like the clutch not wanting to disengage at times (clutch pedal all the way to the floor). It turned out that the rollers in the pilot bearing were jamming together and it started to act like a sprag, and was grabbing the input shaft of the trans (with the clutch disengaged), so it was essentially spinning with the engine. I'm convinced that the bearing failure was due to improper installation. Suprisingly, it didn't damage the input shaft pilot bearing surface.
